    BULLSHIT.

2017 Willys edition only has 32" tires stock and in personal experience, EPA ratings, and fuelly ratings the wrangler gets empirically worse gas mileage even when stock. Which makes sense since its the same weight with a much worse Cd, more aggressive tires, and more aggressive gearing (its just science at this point). You think moving up to 35s will improve MPG?? lol.

As for power the Tacoma also empirically wins: hauls more, tows more, and is significantly faster both from a dig and on highway pulls. I literally drove them both back to back for 300+ miles just two weeks ago. The wrangler didn't even make it home! Its STILL broke down at the dealership. 14 more days and I can lemon law that POS.

I sold my JKU and bought a Tacoma. PM me if I can be of any help. I like to be as unbiased as possible. There are pros and cons to both platforms, but asking in a Tacoma forum probably isn’t going to be a lot of help to you.

Well, My wife and I have owned and driven (8) eight different JK's and JKU's. One 2008 which had no issues, except low power, but traded it in on a 2012. Bought a second 2012 before we learned cylinder heads were defective. The first 2012 had hill-holder issues that the dealer tried to fix. Kept it for 45 days and then just took it back and gave me a new one. After the head issues we traded them in for a 2013 and a 2014. The 2013 had sand in the casting which clogged up the radiator and heater core. The 2014 had issues with the oil cooler housing leaking. Finally ended up with (2) 2016's and then came shifter bushing issues and a number of recalls. Finally had enough and traded both in and now have a 2017 TRD Sport. Always was a Chrysler loyalist, but will NEVER own another Wrangler. Take the Tacoma hands down!

The FJ is a great platform but they do not sell the vehicle new. Im asking about this on TW to get another perspective past the patriotic posts that come from the Jeep forums and to see the other side. Does the Tacoma have a certain personality to it?

Cool story. Your opinion is gold, while mine is "BULLSHIT." EAD, bud.

Jeep: 285 HP, 4056 curb weight, 17/21 EPA estimates.
Tacoma: 278 HP, 4325 curb weight, 17/21 EPA estimates.

Less power, more weight. Not to mention, the abysmal transmission programming we are all aware of on the 3rd gens.

I ran 315/70/17 C range duratracs, which were lightweight tires. I even attached my personal fully report. My Tacoma is lucky to get 17.5 mpg combined with 255/75 c range tires with no lift. Fully report for the 4runner was with 285/70 10 ply Toyo at2's with an icon lift.

That's cool you drove them back to back for a few hundred miles. I've owned both of them.

    My opinion is obviously invalid.

My TJ sucked, but I loved it. Slow as fuck, shitty mileage, no room for ANYTHING, not able to attain highway speeds, but it could go anywhere.

Tacoma, wow it rides great , I can use the phone when I’m actually driving, I can go 85, I can haul stuff, I can tow stuff, it’s way too long DCLB, I LOVE IT!

I came from a JK and this sums it up perfectly. Love both for their own merits - which you've described exactly.

I owned a 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (4 door for those that are unfamiliar) and now have a 2017 Tacoma DCSB. I haven’t really done much off-roading in either, so most of this is coming from a daily driver perspective.

The wrangler got about 1-2 mpg less on average.

On the highway the road noise was a bit higher on the Jeep as it was a soft top but still a lot quieter than many of the older jeeps.

In Texas (and I suppose in general in the summer) you could always feel the heat through the soft top even with the ac on full blast though with such little insulation that’s expected - just not something you think about if you haven’t owned a Jeep before.

The Jeep felt a little more powerful in the engine department but I think that has more to do with tuning than the actual engines.

Other than that that it’s just the typical truck bed vs covered storage and what works best for you.

I have had no problems with either and they were both great to drive and would buy again. I wouldn’t mind having one of the modified jeeps with a truck bed - some of them look really nice.

Edit: I do remember now just before I sold the wrangler that the passenger seat floorboard kept getting wet. Didn’t take the time to figure out what the cause was before selling. Probably started around 50k mileage wise

Good point about the insulation. I had the hard top, and it was rough in the summer. You could always feel heat radiating through. They make some nice insulation kits, but I didn't own it long enough to invest.

I had both the premium soft top and a hard top on my JKU rubicon. The base top does not insulate nearly at all. Loved my built rubicon. As a daily driver it made my life hell. No thanks.

My 4runner got worse than that with 270's on 17in wheels. No armor. 270/70/r17 I think

Your memory seems to be pretty bad since you used to own a wrangler and seem to have forgotten everything about it. I CURRENTLY have both a wrangler and Tacoma. I can literally post pics of the window stickers so I don't know what you're trying to pull claiming the EPA #s are different than what they actually are.

FACT: my 2017 Wrangler unlimited Willys 4x4 has an EPA rating of 16 city / 20 highway
Also FACT: My 2017 Tacoma TRD Offroad 4X4 has an EPA rating of 18 city / 23 highway

Why bother trying to lie about that? You can just google it lol.

You then post a SINGLE persons fuelly profile?? lol. Why not post the entire averages?? Oh right because it proves you wrong again.

Not to mention my personal experience, I don't have to rely on foggy memory I take these two out on trips together all the time:

I'm sorry but you have to be pretty stupid to actually think the wrangler gets better MPG than the Tacoma....

Using multiple results from Fuelly for a Wrangler is also not worthwhile since I would guess that most of those are not running stock rubber.

Most of the Jeeps pictured in your screenshot are running larger than stock tires, which is awesome for improving fuel economy.

Lol. The basic laws of Physics says the Tacoma should get better mileage. The EPA says the Tacoma gets better mpg. Fuelly shows the Tacoma gets better mpg. and when I drive them back 2 back the Tacoma gets better mpg.

But it must be fake news right??

I did google the EPA ratings. My posting was from motor trends website. Take it up with them. Ya, I posted one person's fully report. My own. A single driver will have more consistent readings due to habits and environment than averages on fuelly.

Thanks for the numerous "stupid" comments... I hope it makes you feel like the bigger man.

Major lurker here who's been studying the 3rd gen while waiting for the JLUR. I was leaning towards a JLUR but after seeing the pricing which was announced today, it looks like it may cost around $10,000 more than a '17 DCSB Off Road. Hmmm...

I've owned a few Wranglers: '06 TJ Rubicon, '08 JKU, and an '06 LJ.

I won't bash Jeeps because I love them. But, for me, the practical ride is the Tacoma. I simply cant drive a Jeep if it's stock or close to it....I just don't like the look of them unless they have big tires. My LJ was on 37"s and my JKU was on 38"s - but the Tacoma looks good enough on measly 33.5"s
