I've been chatting on Toyota forums for about 3 years now. I have yet to put a lift on my truck but I have to say that when I first started chatting on TN and TW all the hype was directed towards Coilover type lifts. Now it seems that it has shifted towards OME type shock lift.

I guess coilovers do serve their purpose for the hardcore off roader. But to guys like me who just want a lift for clearance and everyday driving. I think the OME type set up is better. If a shock goes on you, you get it replaced. If a coil over goes on you, you have to set it away to get revalved.

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
the lift from OMEs doesnt come from the shock, it comes from the coil. the lift on 5100s comes from the shocks

You just compared a type of lift to a brand

    Coilover vs. OME?

Not sure what you mean by your post

Unless you are just wanting a shock replacement rather than a coil and shock replacement

Ome type lift is a coilover, just not an adjustable coilover.

Are coilovers not a shock and sping assembled in one unit vs a seperate sping and shock?

If a shock goes you just buy a new shock if a coilover goes you have to get it revalved.

shock+spring = $150 per shock on average $75 per spring on average. If a shock goes... you just go buy a new one and replace it all in the same day.

coilover=$500 per coilover + 40 per coilover every 2 years to get revalved and the hastle of having to wait for it while your truck sits.

OP i understand what youre saying

youre speaking of the differences between an adjustable coilover vs a non adj. coilover

it sounds to me like the OME non adjustable is the way to go for you

i personally dont mind getting my coilovers rebuilt but to each their own

your talking about a re-build, homie

you re-valve a shock to change it's performance to better suit your needs

you re-build an adjustable CO when the seals, oil and maybe shaft need to be replaced.

big difference not only in those 2 terms but also a simple spring and shock assembly and a custom built, OE replacement, race style adjustable coilover

I understand what he's getting at... I was in the same boat when searching for a better lift then the spacers I had.
I wanted coilovers but didnt like the fact that if something broke or wore out I had to send it back to get re-built. But I did want the adjustability bc I wanted to set it where I wanted, and could go back down to stock hight or 2" If I wanted.
So I opted for the Toytecs, Not re-buildable but they have a life-time warrenty. And since I wont be doing any major offroading, they are awsome for my needs.

But If you dont need./want the adjustability, the OME lift is for you. Get the same comfort as some great coilovers without the adjustability part. :)

I have an OME lift and i regret doing it..... If i could go back i would have gone coilover. The OME lift is ok, but its still somewhat harsh, and they sag..... an adjustable coil will not settle, and if by chance it does, you can crank it up a little.

If i were looking to save money and not go full adj coilover, Id just go with a spacer lift and get new shocks.

i can understand what the OP is saying too. having to send off an entire shock to be rebuilt does suck but the benifits of running such a shock far out way that minor detail IMO.

plus, to break a race style shock (Icon, Fox, King..) or blow a seal (outside normal wear and tear and the general schedule of a rebuild every 1.5-2 years) you have to be beating on your susp really, really hard. it's almost hard to do becuase chances are you'll break a stock piece before the CO.

it's doesn't sound like the OP is going to be doing serious offroading so he wouldn't have to worry about the shock failing early on him but also if he's not gonna be using them to their potential then why buy them. OME would work fine, like said earlier
