Steel vs Alloy

Where did you find 17" OEM steel wheels? I thought 17s were only aluminum.

The biggest advantage of the lighter alloy wheel is not fuel economy as much as the reduction of unsprung weight. The weight of the tire has a greater effect on rotating mass because the weight is farther from the center of rotation. Some alloys are meant to be pretty but not strong. Check the load rating. The stock alloy wheels offer a lot of strength for the weight.

The steel sensors work in the alloy wheels if you install them upside down. You have to warn the tire tech that you have done that if they pull your tires off the wheel. If you don't, the tire iron will hit the sensor and break it. I ran them for many years that way with no trouble. Eventually they died, and I replaced them with Oro-tek

This is true depending on the wheel mostly see it on Tundra's. Most of the steel wheels sensors angle will not allow the sensor to butt up next to the wheel causing a lot of headache to mount or dismount a tire without breaking them.

The one thing you will need for sure is different lug nuts.

 

It is no headache at all unless the tire tech doesn't know. It is a matter of where he starts and stops the tire iron during tire removal. Most experienced techs never run the iron past that sensor anyway. When you flip the sensor to put it into the allow wheel, it simply places the body of the sensor a little closer to the rim of the wheel. There are no other problems with doing this. They seal fine and function fine, and they exit the wheel at the same angle as the alloy sensors.

 

Why PM? I'd like to know, too. I assume it's not 17" steel spares from FJ Cruisers you're talking about but perhaps a Prado source.

 

I have the wheels and sensors posted in the for sale section of the site for $100. He said he was interested in the sensors. I’ll sale them for $50. I have 4. Changed my wheels to alloy after I got truck and had to purchase new sensors. PM me to set up payment and shipping if interested.

Sorry I should of been more clear about that. 4runner and FJ steelies are 17". I'm running 4 4runner spares and carrying a tacoma 16" spare. They're not that hard to source, I actually had discount tire get mine when I got AT2 grabbers from them. They're heavy, but strong and cheap also. Pick your poison
