Not sure if discussed, but I would replace the motor with either a well built 6.0 or a 6.7 if one can be acquired inexpensively. 6.4 was not the greatest motor. Same heads as the 6.0, but different block (plus two turbos, which is kinda cool I guess :D). The failure you mention is pretty common. Believe it's an EGR failure, possibly head gaskets. I can't recall. Anyway, those motors can be "bulletproofed", but I think all said and done you'd be better off with either a 6.0 or the newer 6.7. The 6.0 had its problems too, but overall could be better protected than the 6.4 and cheaper than the 6.7.

Those trucks have a bad reputation, but I think it's mostly caused by owners who demand too much from their truck. Or just beat the snot out of them.
Alternatively, you could probably do a Cummins swap. :burnrubber:

7.3 is an option too. As far as I know those were solid. Not very good fuel economy for a diesel and parts are becoming difficult to find however. If I was going to get a 7.3 I'd get one with mechanical fuel injection, just cause haha. I don't know very much about the 7.3 though. It's probably worth mentioning, I know doing just the heads on a 6.4 or a 6.7, the whole cab has to come off. I'd imagine swapping a motor would require the same thing. Possibly with the 7.3 as well.

Ultimately, I'd do some research on all of them. One may be better for you than the other. There's happy owners with all of those engines. Just need to know what to look out for.

And the A4OD automatic sucks. Is there any way to adapt a TorqShift to a 7.3L?

Charlie you getting a little crazy with this. The 6.4 is a decent motor when treated right. Remember this is a work truck not a play toy. You go trying to put in custom drivetrain you are going to get custom problems.

That was someone else's suggestion. My friend Tyler says that the 6.4L is a good motor if treated right. Other people say the motor is total shit...

Well take it for what it's worth, coming from someone with diesels in their background, the 6.4L is a good motor when you treat it right.

I haven't the foggiest idea. Lol. I know the 6.0 trans is solid. 5R110 something or another.

Like raiderpower said, the 6.4 is fine. You just need to take proper steps to ensure it remains a happy motor. Powerstroke.org is Tacomaworld for Ford owners. Lots of good knowledge on that site.

That's where I'm probably gonna head next. My dad has a Honda Pilot so I'm probably gonna head to Piloteers.com...

I've made a point of joining car forums that either pertain to my favorite cars, or cars that my various family members and I own...

The transmission in the 6.0 trucks is called TorqShift. For 7.3 trucks, you were better off getting a manual transmission.
