Bumpy ride & understanding lift.

What do you think that this will do for me? Or them? I filed an arbitration agreement, so i have to talk to the, first. Im currently looking at the paperwork labeled VEHICLE PRIOR HISTORY REPORT. it is checked off next to previous frame damage and says "structural altercation, 'lifted'".

 

Maybe it WAS lifted

So as to your first question, Bilstein 5100's & 4600's are valved the same. There won't be much difference in ride quality between the 2. Any difference will be more attributed to the fact that 1 set of shocks is newer than the other. The only caveat to this would be the fact that the stock Toyota Bilsteins have a smaller diameter shock body than the aftermarket 5100 & 4600's so this may cause some difference in ride quality.

To accurately tell how much lift you have, you need to have a baseline measurement from prior to lifting the truck, which you don't have. Also, there is not "highest setting" on those stock TRD Bilsteins. Unlike the 5100's, they are non-adjustable shocks. There is no adjusting lift on the stock shocks...

There are other things that can cause rough ride. What kind of tires do you have? E rated, off-road tires ride much rougher.

I don't recall what it was but there are many out there. What i used it for probably isn't what they're meant for but it worked.

If you do go with 5100s up front do yourself a favor and leave them on the lowest "0" setting and use an aftermarket spring (such as OME) to achieve your lift. That way you won't sacrifice any ride quality by preloading the shock.

They will act like they have very little room for negotiation. I didn't want to tell them that i totaled my car a week prior, and i needed a new vehicle ASAP. I managed to get them down from $23k to 22k after an hour of negotiations and pointing out it needed an alignment and balance, and some stain removal on the seats. I could've gotten it down to 21k had i told them what i was willing to spend and walked away, but i needed some wheels. Tom, the owner, is super nice and not pushy at all. If you tell them you just want to look, they won't bother you whatsoever.

The 5100s at the lowest setting, will sit at the same ride height as the stock TRD shocks, right?

 

If you use the stock coil springs, yes, 5100's at their lowest setting will have approximately the same ride height

It depends upon what rights you waived by signing the waiver. Waivers have a nasty habit of biting back--I only very rarely sign them....

 

Don't trust Carfax... bought my wife's Honda Pilot w/ a clean Carfax and it clearly had been in a wreck w/ the front corner panel replaced and the entire car was repainted. I'm still kicking myself for not digging into it more before we bought it. I got it mechanically back up to my standards, but it was not cheap or easy.

 

That sucks! Carfax only reports what is reported... if that makes sense. They only show what was claimed on insurance, etc. ...at best.

 

Yep... if a dealership fixes a vehicle on their nickel (like the manager wrecked it...), they are not required to report anything. Carfax is only as good as the info that gets reported to them and there is nothing to make any shop, dealership, or person report it.

 

Absolutely true. My civic had been in two accidents that never got reported to carfax. There is no damage guarantee, other than the zero frame damage guarantee... and i think maybe flood and fire guarantees. Thats why you inspect the car with a microscope and feel the inside of the panels and bumpers for body work. Look for paint overspray in engine compartments and undercarriage. If you go over it with a fine tooth comb, you'll find any imperfections. I learned this the hard way as a kid- i bought multiple lemons.
