Just go to the end of the pavement on Black Balsam. There at the end where the bathrooms are Bare right on the old dirt road. Remember gate will be locked from Jan 1 to Aug 15. You'll need to buff out scratches from bushes being over grown! The worst part is within the first half mile. I was told 40 years ago the road was good enough to drive a car around. It is actually the remnants of an old railroad grade.

From this past weekend in and around Anza Borrego. Buddy of mine took the last one.

Early evening drive down Grapevine Canyon.

Evidently there's a desert kit fox den close to where we were camped. Their tracks were all over our campsite.

What railroad is than? Looks like narrow gauge. Also looks like it's in use.

"California \ United States GypsumUnited States Gypsum.

The United States Gypsum Corporation (USG) currently operates an active 20.5 mile industrial narrow gauge railroad connecting their gypsum quarry to their plant at Plaster City (formerly Maria). The line hauls gypsum rock from the quarry to the plant.

The line was originally built by the Imperial Gypsum Company, owned by the Imperial Valley Gypsum and Oil Corporation. The railroad built from the junction with the San Diego & Arizona Eastern Railway (Southern Pacific) at Plaster City north to the quarry. Surveying commenced in April 1921, grading on October 3, 1921 and construction was completed on September 15, 1922. Commercial operation commenced on October 14, 1922.

Two years after completion of the line (1924), the company was sold to the Pacific Portland Cement Company. U.S. Gypsum purchased the operation from the Pacific Portland Cement Company in 1946."

According to Wikipedia, it is the only remaining operational industrial use narrow guage track in the US.

They usually make their last run around 10pm or so. Every once in a while they'll come rolling through overnight when you're sleeping, but I guess I've just gotten used to it over the years. They come through relatively slow, but one Saturday night a couple years ago it came by at about 2-3am at 50mph or so. That one woke me up!
