What mower do you have?

Since its summer and all, might as well talk about lawn mowers. I grew up with a 13 acre yard. So we wore out riding mowers like crazy. We had in order:

1970's Arien's 30" riding mower, 12 HP Tecumseh
1980's Honda riding mower, 12 HP Honda
1970's Kubota diesel tractor. 12 HP 2 cylinder diesel Kubota
1990's MTD with 12 HP Briggs. (Piece of shit too)
1990's Murray with 14.5 HP OHV Briggs ( Also a piece of shit)
2003 Kubota with 22 HP diesel Kubota engine ( still have this one)

Push mowers:
1970's Snapper 2 cycle. That thing was great!
1970's generic push mower with Briggs. Still have it
1980's Sears with Tecumseh. Crap!
2002 MTD push mower, 6 HP Briggs

What I personally own for my lawn:

Vintage 1970's Lawn Boy, 2 stroke engine. I LOVE this mower. Starts easy, runs great, very reliable.

John Deere x320

 

Honda self-propelled push mower (from the Honda motorcycle dealer, not Lowes). It is approx 20 years old and still running excellent. Has ALWAYS started on the first pull. It smokes just a tad for about 15 seconds after it is started. Cost a fortune but it has been well worth it. I bought it at the time because my boys were mowing half the yards in the nieghborhood and it was one of the first to have the instant blade brake. Needless to say, I will be getting another Honda when/if this one ever croaks...

 

Had a Tennesee Walker with Kohler 18hp?? Needed something a little faster so picked up a Kubota ZD326 zero turn diesel 60 inch.
Truth be told the Walker cut better just took longer.

 

My early 90s Snapper took a dump on me last year...

so I went cheap and bought a Toro from lowes... I hate it... it's front wheel propelled instead of rear wheel like the old snapper... sucks... meh

But hopefully in a year or two I have a zero turn

 

I'm in the market for a good ridding mower. Can any point me in the right direction to a good one that won't break the bank? I have been on Craigs wow it goes from junk to expencive. Any brands to really stay away from? I really hate having a yard I should have stayed in the desert.

 

Some of the guys here might disagree, but I've got a Sears riding lawn mower that I've had for close to 20 years. I've replaced the blades once and the battery once. Other than basic upkeep it still runs like new, even after my nephew left it outside all winter one year.

 

i have a troybilt 18.5 horse bronco.

 

i want to say its a 20 hp snapper push behind. pretty sure its 20... its decent... but im trying to talk the rents in to getting a riding mower. they give such a nicer cut and would be so much easier to mow my yard. its almost 1.5 acres and takes forever with the little 21 inch push mower... used the neighbors riding mower and had the yard done in about 20 mins

 

hell...i gotta get a push mower for our front yard......so damn many rocks and roots in it.

 

lol yeh my yard is starting to do that. but i can think of so many reasons a tractor would be nice... not only for cutting the grass but hauling crap around the yard, get a little dump trailer for mulch and crap like that... would be nice!


damn... im lazy as hell!

 

Got a 3.5 hp lawn boy walk behind that's self propelled. It always needs three attempts to start but it's mowed about 3 lifetimes of mowing

We got a John Deere zero-turn mower a few weeks ago, love it and runs like a champ.

 

I have a John Deere riding mower, and am getting ready to sell a Yanmar 1500 diesel tractor with a bad clutch. The bulk of the mowing is done between two full size geldings, and my miniature stallion.

 

started out mowing as a youngster with one of these: 70's model 3 speed w/42" deck Cub


then got one of these: Yamaha TerraPro it had the 48" deck tho. R.I.P. (blowout on trailer=badnews)


then one of these: 54" deck w/hydrostat


currently filling the hearts of grass blades with fear with one of these:


it's a beast. 62" per pass. 24hp Yanmar diesel. the 455 was a great tractor...put 935 hours on it on the original belt other than scheduled maintenance it also need a battery once. it had a 23hp Yanmar. verdict still out on the 2305...it's only a couple years old but has been great so far. i'm sold on John Deere...they're kinda like Toyotas i am of course reffering to the ones you buy at a JD dealership...not at Lowes or Homer Depot. the TerraPro 4wheelr/mower was neat...but had too much...."stuff" on it to go wrong...it's cool being able to mow the lawn, then drop the deck and go for a spin though. i do kinda miss poppin wheelies on the cub cadet
