It’s an oil that’s applied to all sides. The walls are furred out 3/4” with horizontal boards that have notches to allow for water to drain and air to flow through with screens at the top and bottom of the walls. It’s called a rain screen, it allows the wood to breath on all sides, adds “r” value and let’s any water that gets past the siding to drain out the bottom.
The eves have exposed rafter tails and the same cedar v-grove as the roof deck. It’s a metal roof applied over flat 2x4 with notches, creating another air space to aid in possible condensation.

Interesting with the spacing behind the siding. That's not something I see up here. Usually just sheathing, Tyvek type membrane and then siding. Of course vertical siding requires the furring strips for nailers.

With wood siding it’s always a good idea to use a rain screen, it makes the siding last longer now that houses are so well insulated, it lets the wood breath. I like it because it deals with moisture penetration well.
I’m just starting to use that system. It will become an industry standard soon. They already sell 3/8” corrugated plastic furring strips for horizontal siding.

Not exactly what I did, but gives you the idea.

Very cool. I've heard tar paper is making a comeback. My house has it (50 yrs old). I have the grooved cedar shakes with a fiber type breather board material underneath. Both put up in courses. I've posted my window & door replacement projects in the home improvement thread.

With that rain screening, do you pad out the windows & doors with the same material as the strips?

Depending on the swing of the door, in-swing I set it with jamb extension to the outside, out swing the opposite, if it has fins I pad the fins. I pad the windows also.
    * I didn’t pad the windows on the one I’m doing now, I’m rabbiting the trim to capture the siding.

I wonder how that would/could work with cedar shingles (4-5" courses) that are very common here in New England.

I think I've seen a mesh type product that could be used.

    Genius!

I guess you only need the horizontal pieces where you'd be nailing. Quite a bit of prep work....but I bet it pays off big time.

Do you run the pieces over a table saw with dado blade to make the rain channels/grooves or use a router?

Some people rip T11 plywood and treat it, already has the notches. I used a router on 1x6’s and ripped them in half, would use T11 next time. :-/
