I jumped on that group buy that was going on here. It's the off brand tent from china, but I figured 600 shipped for a tent, annex and a foxwing style awning isnt a bad deal to get me started. If I decide I like the RTT and actually use it I can always get a "real" one later

Soundx like a good way to try out a new set up. Don't forget the pics.

I looked around for a while and contacted a few of the folks who seemed to be coming up with solutions (sometimes years ago). I never came across anything that actually worked/was financially worthwhile on a small scale.

I ended up buying one from CVT when they were doing 20% off (and I think they were slightly cheaper at a given size anyway...at least for me). The killer for them is shipping, since there is no way to make them small; so if you can pick one up, that's the way to go. Also - I think they are basically the same (again, at a given size), from everyone.

I've used mine for ~30 nights now and love it. Totally worth the money; keeps the mattress completely dry, though condensation still forms on the floor.

You know I like you're tent, but that "fumbling and jumping" doesn't take all that long - what, 5 minutes with two people? :boink: Now, the performance in the rain (puts away drier) and the fact that you can store more stuff inside - those are things I'd like for sure!

But then, it's sooooo long. Sigh. Life is so full of tradeoffs!

Dude, you're too young to be all that worried about safety! Maybe the next time we get together, I'll bring you a little stepstool like Mike uses. hahahahaha  @Digiratus

For me it's mostly a size-over-the-bed thing. I like having the ability to store things in the bed that are taller than the bottom of my rack (which I admit is lower than yours). Not sure how to fix that problem really - I mean, without shrinking. :)

I do like that you've got one though, so I can keep up-to-date on the differences, should I ever change my mind.

    Check The Build Thread
I’ve been looking at the AutoHome Air Top because of the option to utilize a Changing Room. Changing Room would be for when the tent is on the trailer and stationary for a period of time.

I wouldn’t mind a budget friendly hardshell in addition to my CVT Mt. Shasta Extended Summit. Hardshell would go on the truck shell for the quick trips where I don’t want to pull the trailer. If I was going to change everything up, and go with a full priced hard shell, I’d sell the Shasta.

Wonder if there are any plans to offer a “changing room” for the CVT hardshell in the future?

Higher? You crazy man! It's OK, I guess, since you have Dante. Though, it seemed short bed wasn't awesome for sheet goods. Time for a hoist to get the tent and the rack off the green truck in the garage.

Oh, and I'll just leave this here...

A changing room option would be awesome. Especially if they make it available for older tents. I just bought a hardshell from them....

Hey guys I haven't posted in very long time but I'm unloaded my soft shell rtt and looking at either a ruggedized version or hard shell since they're in the same price range. Anyone have any input?

Currently have a tepui kukenam sky

I saw you post in the Mt. Helen thread. If you are looking for more space you should get a bigger soft shell. I actually sacrificed space for the simplicity of the hard-shell. Can't have both!

Yea the more I read the more I think I'll break one of the hard shells on a tree cause with dimensions off the sites I'd have to get a new higher rack so my tool box will open and so they won't hit my spare tire. Which will put the tent in tree bashing territory

So the wife to be is really sold on the idea of a tepui XL ruggedized probably stay with the kukenam sky since it's served us so well and I love taking the fly off in the summer. My next challenge will be how do I create 16" of space Which is the difference between the standard and the xl. Right now I set my tent back further to keep access to my tool box which holds, tools, my air compressor for lockers etc, axles blah blah blah shit I don't want flopping around. I could go slightly higher cause I have the prinsu rack. I really like having the tent levelish with the high point of the roof... kinda looking for ideas

You can see here what I mean

Ya after I told her I'd need a new rack etc she had a think and decided the ruggedized version of the regular sky would be fine lol she thought she could build a pillow fort in the xl

That's what I have now. Except it's not the sky version. To be able to still access your tools it would have to be mounted pretty high

Get a toolbox that sits within the bed and not on top of the bed sides. Just make sure the lid can open under the bars. Then move the tent toward the cab! Would that be an option?

Exactly... how do you like your ruggedized ? I've had basically all the straps break on my standard. The Velcro doesn't work anymore either but that's to be expected

It could be I'd have to find one on the cheap cause It needs to have a hole sawed into it for my airlines and wire harness, will also require drilling the bed for carriage bolts to bolt it down. And then I'd have to ditch my awning in favor of a smaller one or figure out how to mount the 2.5m one differently cause I feel like the xl tent wouldn't allow for it to be the way it is now....
