Check your state motor vehicle laws. Most states have something that says . "No person shall operate any motor vehicle having three or more wheels, any trailer, or semitrailer unless equipped with fenders, covers, or devices, including flaps or splash aprons, or unless the body of the vehicle or attachments thereto afford adequate protection to effectively minimize the spray or splash of water or mud to the rear of the vehicle and all such equipment or such body or attachments thereto shall be at least as wide as the tire tread."

Bottom line, tires can legally stick out as long as it has some device to keep from throwing road debris, etc.

In the South I’ve NEVER seen this enforced at all. We have trucks here with wheels sticking 10-12 inches out from the fenders. And by South, I’m referring to KY, TN, VA, NC, SC, GA and FL. Never spent much time in Al, MI or LA, so I can’t speak for those 3. All the others I mentioned I’ve either lived or drive through those states on a regular basis.

So good news and bad news.

Bad news is I ran out of daylight to take good pics... so those will have to wait.

Good news is I think I kinda sorta got out of the dog house.

First, I brought home dinner, and she was hungry.

Second, when the anger level was rising after she found out where I was (and also the hunger), I calmly explained while she ate that this was all really just a very solid investment!

"Waitwut?"... So I told her that I'm going to have to buy tires in 50k miles anyways, right?? Oil prices are cheap right now, and surely to make tires you need some sort of oil in there! Right?? Right?? Can't argue with that, mostly. (She doesn't really get the whole separation of wheels and tires, luckily.) Then, I explained oil prices were cheap, so better buy them now and store my other stock tires for when these wear out, because then it's like I can change out my tires for the old ones for free and surely the tire prices will have risen by then anyways, since surely they must be suppressed with the oil prices right now, so it's like I got them for a super steal!

She gave me a really nasty look, but couldn't say much... because she was eating...

I agree it is not a high priority check for LEO's. Just thought I would mention it. It can be an issue if the tires don't have something like flaps to stop debris from being thrown.

Years ago I had a lifted Chevy with large tires that stuck out(no flaps) pass me. The tires picked up a rock and it hit my windshield. Lucky I had a passenger who witnessed the incident. Caught up the Chevy at a gas station. Told the driver what happened. He was pretty cool and gave me his insurance information. His company took care of my replacement windshield.

That’s cool! A lot of drivers aren’t like that. And I apologize if my post seemed like I was coming off like a dick. I surely didn’t mean it to come across that way, so I hope you didn’t take it as such.

Hiding THOSE tires from wife??? Hard to see the difference between stock and new ones. Mine stick out about 1.7" and no issue.

Your post was fine. My only intent was to show there are mv laws regarding tires. Yes, mostly never enforced by LEO's. Just wanted people to consider what the wide tires can do and be respectful to others on the road.

    Have a Merry Christmas.

Great. I do like the look of the wider tires.

Have a Great Christmas. May Santa bring you lots of things for your Tacoma.

    It's not bad.

It's... B-b-b-b-bad. Bad to the bone!

If you go anyplace that is commonly frequented by off-road enthusiasts what you WON'T see are tires that stay inside the wheel wells. lol

FWIW, as a former AZ LEO, and a traffic hound, I never once stopped or cited anyone for big tires or lack of mud flaps.

A motor officer, or DPS, might consider it because that's all they do.

EDIT: I should note that drug guys typically use minor stuff like this for legal justification to stop vehicles they think might contain hoodlums, guns, drugs, etc. So if you're a thug you're giving the police a free reason to mess with you.

Haha its the south tho. There's barely any laws with respect to what's street legal and the few that exist are never enforced. Its not uncommon to see big agriculture tractors that take up two lanes rolling around here.
