Haha I've ridden and helped build some dedicated rock/wheeling rigs. I like getting out and exploring no matter what it is.

Damn man you are getting me pumped to bring my ride. I imagine you would bring an all-mountain bike instead of the DH sled?

I have 2 old ass mtn bikes one from like the 80s and one from the 90s. DH to me is going to be testing the waters I don't know what safety gear if any other than a helmet they req. But it'll be fun none the less or a bucket full of laughs because falling a bunch!

How do you plan to test the waters? I assume going to beach and renting a bike right? Most places just require a helmet of some sort and will charge extra if you want a full face over an open lid. Unless its a rocky environment I just run knee/shin guards, full face, and gogs. I used to just run knee pads, but got hit by a ricochet rock chasing a racer through a rock garden in the shin. I almost let the bike goes cause of how hard the rock hit.

Go down what looks to be the easiest and see how it goes then go down the rougher stuff. No I won't rent a bike. I'll just kamikaze mine down and hope it stays together. I always have gaffers tape in the truck! Ummmm yeah safety gear = helmet and my glasses.

Ride a motorcycle for a few years and get hit with a few cicadas and crap thrown off car and truck tires you'll learn to deal with getting hit with stuff and riding through the initial knee jerk pain reaction.

Sounds like the economical approach, but if you have a moto background I think you will have a good handle of whats what out there if you rode power line trails and stuff. Honestly, DH is much more designed and benchcut than it used to be. I think as long as you adopt the 5-8 mph motto over obstacles you cant really go wrong besides the road gaps that sometimes require a lot of speed.

I know it might sound childish to say, but understanding how to crash is probably one of the best skills. As long as you understand to go with the motion when possible and to be cognizant of your fingers you should be alright. As you probably know from your moto days, committing on stuff normally yields better results than half-assing it. If you have a buddy that has done DH, might not hurt to roll with him when you go.
