Alright, people with caps/toppers. I've got the opportunity to buy a 2 year old Leer 100R fiberglass cap with the roof rack system, interior carpet/insulation, interior light, and the removable front window. It's used, but it is in good shape with no damage/blems, and is already color-matched to my truck. I've got the offer of $1400 installed and am tempted. Is this a fair deal for something like this? I haven't bought a cap since I spent $100 on a crappy aluminum one 10 years ago, so my scale is off.

$1400 is a little higher than the prices most people want to pay, but not by much. $1000 is usually what I see.

That said, it sounds like the perfect fit and there's no price too high for that. On my first taco I had a color matched Leer that sounds exactly like what you're describing, with bed rug installed that matched the carpet on the cap. It was comfy as hell and a wonderful cap.

I'd go for it.

 

When I was shopping around for a new one thinking I would never find a used one, the cheapest quote I had was 1200 with the bare minimum. Sliding side windows with screens and a single T handle lock. I got one with some scratches for 625 but drove 3hrs to get it. Now I want to add a cargo basket to it and at some point will install the matgecko bed/shell light kit (probably spring when it's warm)

Its not outrageous- on the higher side... but its color matched and installed (I am assuming this is a dealer so your paying dealer prices too)

I picked up my black Leer 180 long bed used on CL for $850 with thule rack&tracks, carpeted, removable slider and mounting hardwear --- installed (ie the guy helped me lift it onto the truck and I bolted it down) it wasnt perfect either, had a few minor chips/scratches

I was looking for a color match... but most were up in the 1200-1700 range and I wasn't willing to pay that. Liked the idea of the 180 mid height and this one popped up. Called the guy immediately. When I picked it up he said he had 5 other calls after me.

If its the cap you want its not bad. If your looking for a deal you need to be willing to wait, act fast, make the drive and comprise... so thats something to factor into the cost as well- if you willing to do all that or if the convenience of this one is worth it.

 

No damage, already your color... do you want the roof rack system or is that just a bonus? The price seems great but you could probably find a cheaper one without a roof rack unless you want one. They are spendy, you are probably paying less than half of what it cost new.

Thinking about doing the Kuat Mini Skinny on one side and a pelican/plano case on the other. Plan is to do a ghetto prinsu rack (80/20 bars with a fabbed aluminum mount to my existing tracks) to keep the height as low as possible since Ive got a mid height cap

 

I plan to just find a cargo basket with shape and dims I like on craigslist then directly mounting it. Drill some holes and probably some Ubolts or something.

 

You don't need to have the "roof rack strips" on the cap, like you do on the cab, to mount a roof rack, right?!

 

Nope, there are many different ways to mount things. But the tracks are one of the easier and more adaptable setups.

 

Gotcha. My cap has no tracks, so that's why I was asking.

 

Yea tracks arent needed- they just offer more adjustability. Also easier removal in most cases for removing racks and accessories.

My old cap on my first gen had the rack permanently mounted, just drilled through the roof and bolted on. Definitely use some RTV or similar sealant on both sides of the shell to ensure no leaks if you go this route.

 

Gotcha. That's what I was thinking, if and when I did it. Figured it would be needed since I would just be drilling through the cap. Thanks for confirming my "suspicion".

It's really just a bonus; I'd need to carry a stepladder around to put anything on it anyway. But having it is better than not, for if we feel like taking the kayaks camping with us or something.

The color matched isn't a huge concern; I'd be fine with one that was white or black or whatever. But used caps for this truck don't seem to pop up very often. I've been looking off and on since October, and this is one of the first ones to show up. The fact that it's color-matched is just a bonus.

With all those options it had to be north of $2k brand new, and sounds like it is practically new. Plus with dealer install it should be set just right on the truck and be good to go, especially if they are doing the third brake light wiring

I'm still trying to figure out if there's a tube style bed rack that will fit behind my light bar. Or should I go with a full bed rack and mount my lights on that? Ugh, I don't know.

 

You could run a short bed rack in your long bed? Some of them tie into the floor, but nothing a few drilled holes can't fix. Others I think just sit on the bedsides and tie into the side tracks. Most fabricators would probably make a custom one for you with some dimensions too
