Does it take longer than normal for your truck to warm up?

I had a 2006 Tacoma and when it was cold I would go out and let it warm up for about 10 minutes. When I would get in the truck would be already warm and windows defrosted. I have noticed it takes my 2016 a lot longer to warm up. I went out and started it this morning and had it out there for about 20 minutes. Only part of the windshield was defrosted and it was cold as hell in there still. The temp gauge had barely moved. Is this a normal thing and I just need to let it warm up longer or what?

Update: I had bumped recirc button to off.. :censored:

I usually let it warm up until it kills the factory enrichment cycle and then start driving to warm up the rest of the way. On a cold day it will take 4-5 minutes for the enrichment cycle to end, on a warm day sometimes its only a few seconds. The enrichment cycle happens when you first turn the truck on when its cold and it pumps additional fuel to protect the engine, similar to a choke and you will know its happening because the truck will want to idle over 1k during that time and then once the enrichment cycle ends it will return to the normal 6-700. The vents will still be blowing cold air and the temp gauge typically wont move until I am driving around but I wouldn't worry about that too much on these trucks. Engine seems pretty darn reliable to me all things considered. Few bugs for some with the transmission and the crank position sensor recall but other than that it seems like its a pretty damn good release of a redesigned truck to me.

Not like my old '93 which warmed up pretty fast. Maybe the more efficient engine has to do with it taking longer? I have a garage now, makes it real nice.

Weird, I have a 1993 also. Takes about 3 minutes and the heat is working 100% lol.

Could be... less efficient engine means more power being converted into heat so I guess that was what made them warm up faster, bunch of parts grinding on each other making a bunch of extra heat lol

These trucks have an extra electric heating element to provide immediate warmth, set the temp to High, the Heated Seats help alot too.

Well it isn't working properly because after 20 minutes there should be heat coming out my vents. I have the heated seats, they help but still the air is freezing.

If you do a Search on here, 1 of these Threads shows that element in a parts diagram

The new efficient engines warm much faster due to emissions, they want to get out of a rich condition asap

The electric heater will not blow really warm air. It's just a help until things get going. In very low temps you may not even be able to tell unless you really take the time to "feel" it.

The discussion came up a few times before and someone posted the diagram, don' think anyone was having problems though.

I just let mine idle for about 30 to 60 seconds depending on outside temps. By then the idle drops back and off I go. Warm air pumping at the 1 mile mark. The longer it idles, more it clogs the converter. If windows are frosted - use ice scraper or cover.

Temp below 50F, engine cold, fan on, temp dial turned to full and the electric heater will make enough warm air to de-ice a window quickly. To make it a little better turn on recirc to limit the cold outside air coming into the system.

Does the temp gauge move to the normal range after driving or does it stay at the cold mark?

Not that I am aware of. Kind of acts that way. I will check though I don't think that is the problem.

I have always let my trucks/cars warm up in the winter time and never had a problem with converters so I am not worried about that. And quite honestly too lazy to scrap ice :p - I hate the cold, a lot. So I like to have my shit warmed up when I get in to leave.

Just seems abnormal for a 2016 to take forever to get some heat. Warms up for 20 minutes and I am 5 miles down the road before I get any heat. My 1993 takes 5 minutes to get 'some' heat and before the 2 mile mark it is blowing hot air.

Hmm, I wonder if I bumped the recirc button... I honestly think that might be the problem. I will check that on my lunch break! Good thinking!

Yes it goes into the the normal range after driving.

That sounds a little odd... I can let mine sit and idle forever and it wont warm up but it rarely takes more than a mile or two of driving before I start getting heat, might look at the thermostat as someone else mentioned
