Made the "final" run to the metal shop. Any additional metal needed will be minor and I should be able to get this thing built (minus the wiring and hitch piece).

Due to cost, decided to do both the floor and walls in 14g (instead of the sides in 16g). The price difference being 4$ between the two.

    Supplies.jpg

And finally have the frame completed-ish. After doing one last search of heights for DIY trailers, I settled on 24" instead of 33" and I'm glad I did. 24" seems like plenty of room! The telescoping poles for the tent to raise and lower will still be 33", which will give me a little bit of room between the top of the trailer and bottom of the tent when the tent is completely lowered.

The past 2 days of work has proven successful. I have nearly all of the trailer built. Last big things on the list are: rear door (hopefully get done today), lighting (maybe today), and assembling the hitch, and making the telescoping lifts for the CVT. After that I am going to try and get it registered, then painted, then done.

Test fitting the first 2 side panels once I got the floor welded in. I decided to go with 14g sheet metal since it was 4$ more (per 4x8' sheet) instead of 16g. Also ended up doing the walls in sheet metal instead of marine lumber. I will do the lid in the lumber with a weather strip on the underside since that will be easier to remove and I can have an open top trailer if/when I need it.

    Body halfway.jpg

    Sides welded in.
    Body halfway 2.jpg

How it sits as of now. All sides are complete. the vertical pieces along the sides are to attach the fenders and the front is for the tray I am going to have up there (propane, tire, etc). Should have wheels here in the very near future to get it rolling. And again, gonna try and get the rear swing out door and lights done today.

Thanks, I think I'm on the home stretch with it. As for the S/C, due to scheduling and some other things, I have had 2 attempts to start the second part (of 3) but something always came up. So because of that, I have shifted to finishing the trailer first and once thats knocked out of the way, re-engage the S/C. Now it prob wont be done in DEC but with the long weekends in JAN, it should be no problem. Sadly it is still sitting under the fiberglass blankets in the garage (safe from weld sparks haha)

so for now the plan is to just either have it open (in good weather) or crawl back there and get bins when camping. I will eventually cut a door out up there to make that easier but that is way low on the list of getting this thing registered and on the road. As for the rear door, yes, I will be doing a drop down table but that also falls in the same boat as the front door...dont need it to get it road-worthy.

Hopefullly I can get the lights done today, finish the front triangular basket type thing, and set the hitch up.

Paint it with Imron and never worry about it. Also for the plywood, get some fiberglass resin and paint over the wood with that once all your cuts are made and holes drilled. Then paint over it once the resin cures. You'll likely never need to do anything to it again, as it completely seals the wood. Marine grade varnish can do the same thing with more coats.

Got all the mounts made for the lights and ran the wires. Everything passed the functions check so now just wheels and drilling a hole for the eye of the pintle and it'll be good to go. I dont THINK I need to paint it before registration, just weighed.

The end of this trailer build is SO close, I can taste it. Remaining items on the to-do list: build the telescoping rails for the RTT, mount the wheels, finish sealing the seams of the sheet metal, paint it.

I was able to get the tongue jack, hitch mount, and safety chains today as well as 1 side sealed with liquid nails.

If you havent seen it this is a good "what you need to know" on registering a homemade trailer in WA
    http://www.wsp.wa.gov/traveler/docs/inspection_guides/homemade_trailer_inspection_guide.pdf

    The TDLR version
    -Appointments only
-Must have certified scale weight of trailer
-Must have receipts for all major parts

Other than that its just meeting the lighting, splash guard, ect requirements.

I have heard some WSP places are stricter than others. Last trailer a friend built he said they didn't care about the receipts at all. But the time before they poured through them.

Doesn't look like much, but got the telescoping arms completed. The locking, 1/2" spring pins will arrive tomorrow which will snap into place once the tent reaches the appropriate height. Based off other's experiences, I have decided against the gas shock struts to raise the tent and went with the scissor jack/power drill option to raise and lower the platform. I am getting the wheels on Friday from a friend and getting it registered next week. Since it will remain in a garage (minus usage out and about) I may hold off on painting it until warmer weather (or may not...might get impatient) since I will hopefully be able to paint it "myself" (@MaxxTRD ). Glad it's practically done (minus splash guards) and I'm looking forward to hitting the woods with it!

    Telescoping arms.jpg

I'll post a pic once the tent and wheels are on and she's rolling.

:pout:no, both times I set aside to knock that part out, fell through. After the second time, I decided to just finish the trailer by xmas and then work the SC and UCON in JAN. Apparently I wasnt spending enough time with the family doing both and just getting home :oldglory:. So now (and rightfully so, of course) its been more of :angrygirl: and :washing: with a little less of :welder::sawzall:.

EDIT: are you still looking at building a trailer?
