Owner's manual recommends 5W-30 oil. That said, I've run 10W-30 conventional oil for years and had no problems with it. I don't live in a cold climate though.

the owners manual gives a chart of acceptable oil grades based on the temperature. the recommended grade youl see on the cap is the best "all arounder" for most temps.

up here in canada where its in the -40s a 0w oil is a better choice.

I switched from the 5-30 Pennzoil dino that was run in the truck for the first 119,000 miles to Amsoil Signature 10-30. The difference between the 5 and the 10 is only 3 degrees when it comes to cold weather performance. It gets down to 20 below here and the 10-30 has worked fine. The Signature is a 100% pure synthetic though and that makes a big difference in the cold. Most "synthetics" are not 100% synthetic. Mobil 1, for example is a blend. The other reason I switched to the 10-30 is that I heard a piston slap for about 1 second a couple of times and heavier oil helps with that. I haven't heard it since I switched. Also, the closer together the two numbers are on a multi-grade the less viscosity index improvers they have to add and that's a good thing. I'm going between 8 and 9,000 miles between oil and filter changes and the oil analysis are showing very good results.

If you personally know a tribologist who is also a gearhead with testing facility access, you should discuss wts, types and brands with them. You may be surprised that answers don't always support marketing hype or even internet forums.

Otherwise, using what's in your owner's manual for your given operating conditions is a safe bet.

I've used 10/30 for 15 years. No issues here... I use Castrol GTX high mileage.

Vehicle companies who spend millions on developement over many years and miles publish the manuals. Why do we shadetree engineers think we know better?

Only use 5W-30! If you use another viscosity of oil it can destroy your motor and wear it out significantly faster than using the manufacture recommended oil

10W30 is basically obsolete, there is no reason to use it anymore.

5W30 is the same oil but has a better winter rating.

GOD DAMNIT THIS THREAD IS FROM 2017
