Install wasn’t too bad, couple things would have made it better for sure. But will have to get with Dynatrac on that.

Got something else to go with those fenders that I’m going to try and get on tomorrow at some point.

 

I figured you had something else to go with the fenders.

 

You betcha... just need to get two clamps for it is all and it should go on pretty easily.

You had them put 4.56 gears in the axle iirc? Did you ever regear the front?

 

Yes, it has 4.56 gears in it. Front will be regeared next year around March or so. So will be stuck with 2WD for a little bit, but am not planning on doing any wheeling soon.

 

So here is the detailed as much as I can synopsis of the Install along with pictures.

This was all done with some pretty normal tools, the exceptions being.

• Brake Drum Spring Tool
• Brake Bleeder Pump
• Brake Line Wrenches
• Brake Line Bender
• Brass Brake Line Plugs from Amazon

I did not keep track of socket sizes used as I did not think of it, but you will be able to get by using the same tools needed to replace suspension components. 19mm, 17mm, 14mm, etc etc.

I started at about 8:30am on Saturday with getting the rear of the truck up on jack stands and getting the wheels off the truck, parts laid out, and tools ready.
First thing we started on was getting the drive shaft disconnected from the stock rear axle, that took some effort, a little PB Blaster, and a breaker bar as one bolt was on there really well...



Wheels off, brake drums off using my handy dandy bolt that fits perfectly to remove the brake drums... at this point we had the passenger side brake drum off the truck and was cleaning the driver side brake drums with some brake cleaner. Was starting to loosen the bolts on the Ubolts and Shock mounts. Also had gone ahead and disconnected the ABS and ELocker plugs from the truck. Brake lines were still connected at this point.


At this point, we had both brake drums off the stock axle, the stock brake lines disconnected and the new 3" extended lines installed and leaking... as I had not plugged one well enough.

NOTE: Autozone sells some great little Brass Brake Line Plugs for $1.50 a piece, they came in handy here to keep brake fluid from going everwhere while we were swapping stuff out.

Brake drums were a pretty easy uninstall as we followed a well done youtube video on it. I still need to take the drums off again and paint them as they are pretty rusty and just look bad overall.


Nice comparison of the stock rear end vs the Dynatrac rear end... definitely a beefier housing... with a lot more overall clearance. At this point we we had swapped over the ABS and the Brake Lines and was beginning to realize that we were going to have to bend some brake lines to get them to fit on the new Axle... Along with some creative mounting done...


Problem One... no tabs to be able to attach the brake lines to the axle house. Ended up moving the ones that the ABS lines attach to and using that to mount the Brake Lines to and then zipting the ABS wiring to that.


Problem Two: Missing attachment point for the ABS wiring there... Ended up zipting it once again to the brake line.


Problem Three: Self explained in picture...


Problem Four: Also self explained in the picture... Luckily I had someone that could run to harbor freight and get a brake line bender and we were able to bend the brake lines more to be able to match up. Would honestly feel better if this came with a new brake line that matched the axle lines instead of having to bend the stock ones more.


However, once we got all of that figure out, we were able to easily roll it under the truck using my floor jack and get it into place. Got the new Ubolt flip installed and then got the shocks remounted to it, all of that lined up perfectly and without any issues. I may go ahead and cut the Ubolt ends down some though as I feel like they stick up a lot more than needed for this. Still needed to put the new brake lines onto the axle and connect the ABS wire and then reinstall the Brake Drums. As you can see, the drive shaft was still not completely removed from the truck.


Finally had everything put back into place and was in the process of torquing everything down. I still needed to bleed the brakes and remove the drive shaft, but I saved this for the following day when I had light. Will have to update this once I get another picture of the install not on jack stands still.


At this point, I also did not realize that we had done one of the brake drum springs wrong... that was found out the next morning when it made a horrible noise when rolling. Ended up fixing that pretty quickly as I just had to remove the drums and move the spring to the correct spot.

Overall, it took about 8 hours to get the swap done and that included running to AutoZone, taking a couple breaks, lunch, and stopping to wait for one guy to get back from Harbor Freight.

 

Now i just need to find some time to get down there to swap my rear!
