There is a good chance i might be getting a leer camper shell for my 2013 double cab trd off road truck tommorrow, it is releavantly stock, do i need to do any rear suspension mods for this shell, i imagine since its a short bed it migh not be that heavy, its the cab high model.

My leaf springs sucked anyhow and I lifted my truck so they got replaced, but you might be fine. I would recommend some bed channel stiffeners though

My local dealer sells tacoma's with caps.
I'm yet to see them beefing up suspension or adding bed stiffeners.

It's been proven, the bed sides bend out. Mine were out of wack. I've got total chaos brand ones but there are others

My 05 is proof enough for me.
10+ years I notice absolutely no bending of my bedsides.
I'd be embarrassed if my taco couldn't handle a leer cap.

Same here with my 2011. Almost 7 years and no issues with bending of bedsides or sagging of suspension with my Leer 180 mid-rise.

You don't *need* anything, unless you haul a lot. Then maybe better leaf springs.

My Leer 100xr is fine on my stock truck. No sagging

You don’t need anything. You won’t notice any differences in the driving and handling. I have a TRD sport 4x4 long bed with a Leer shell. Driving it I don’t even know the shell is on the truck. You are getting a good shell. Leer are quality shells.

    Lots of threads.
But i am not seeing proof that a stock tacoma needs bed stiffeners just to run a cap.:notsure:
Maybe Fully loaded&armored tacoma's doing Hard off roading constantly with rtt and roof rack.

If you need to modify a Tacoma just because you’re putting a light weight shell on your truck then I’d say taco trucks are weak ass pos. But we know that is not the case. Just get the shell and enjoy.

Since i got the leer 100 XL the truck feels more planted actually feels better when i drive it my wife noticed it to, anybody else have this experience, i think the XL might be a little heavier than sone of the others but it didnt feel bad putting it on the truck

A fiberglass cap adds about 180-200 lbs on the bed. It does help balance out the weight somewhat and may improve handling. The cap alone isn't enough to hurt anything, but if you start putting cargo racks on top and adding another 300+ lbs in gear then you might see problems.

Not a huge deal, and well worth it to me to have lockable weatherproof storage, but a cap does cut into your payload. Most of these trucks have around 1200 lbs of payload which ain't much compared to bigger trucks. Adding a cap does reduce that by around 200 lbs.

Definitely grab some bed stiffeners. Total Chaos seems to make a good pair: http://amzn.to/2BFgvdi

It looks like the bed stiffners work dual purpose as most have places for tie downs, i think ill get a set definately want hurt anything. I have already noticed a miss match in the driver side gap at the tail gate is wider than the passenger side, im going to loosen the bolts in the topper and put a ratchet strap on the track tie downs and see if it will pull it back in line then tighten down the topper.

I ran a cap with stock springs and no bed stiffeners for about 3 years with no issues. The stock springs are soft so it's easier to find the bumpstops with the extra weight but no need for bed stiffeners unless your carrying things on top of your shell often and even then you can possibly do without. I'm running Dakar springs now but no bed stiffeners and I have construction materials or kayaks on the shell at least once a month.

Seems like the consenus is unless your load the topper down you would be good to go, mine dont have a rack, wouldnt mind having one for the cool looking factor but thats alot of expenseif your not going to use it, about all i carry in the bed is about 60 or 70 lbs of hunting gear and items for a weeks trip, i put on the hitch haul to load the deer on and try not to put more than 2 deer on it after i remove the unwanted parts.
