Yes, all 5-speed sticks have 5th gear as an O/D. It's only the 6-speed in the V6 2005-2015 that 5th is the 1:1. Was thinking about my truck when I posted, the ratios in the RA60 in my truck are something of an irritation to me.

If 6th was a deeper overdrive then I could change axle ratios without blinking an eye. But when I get around to finally putting on 255/85R16 I'd like to re-gear. Ideally I'd like 4.56, but that would be pushing it on the Interstate. I tell ya, 1st world problems. I'm thinking a 4:1 inchworm t-case instead.

Wish Toyota had used the FJ 6-speed 6th gear ratio - .799 instead of .849
Might have been worth 1.0 - 1.5 mpg at highway speed.

Yeah, I just don't understand. If there's anywhere that needs a taller O/D it's the U.S. on the Interstates.

i often skip 3rd 4th or 5th depending on where i am in the drive. the OV tune gives big torque mid-range so it makes skipping as easy as pie.

In a nut shell, 1st is too low to start out in, but not a real granny gear, 2nd is too high. 6th is too low for an overdrive, reverse is way too high, and 5th is completely unnecessary. With 6 (count them, 6!) gears to play with, there are many options. We could have gotten a great granny gear, we could have gotten a great OD and still had 5 close ratio road gears for the "sport" model. We could have gotten a granny + 4 usable truck gears + a real OD for the "TRD" model. We also could have gotten a reverse gear low enough to maneuver a trailer without working the hell out of the clutch.

I wasn't kidding when I suggested that the transmission was a transplant. I don't think one bit of thought went into matching the tranny to the engine or the truck. It could have come out of a Buick Skylark o_O.

agreed. makes the truck interesting to drive. i love it but i also feel I'm continually driving in a "workaround" way, constantly planning and compensating.

Yeah, pretty much @badger. But otherwise Toyota nailed it.

Except for the throwout bearing issue.

Oh, and the vague engagement feeling and mile long throw.

The 1st gen 5 speed was great, but I always wanted an overdrive gear added to it. 3100 RPM's at 80mph seems a little high. The 2nd gen 6 speed leaves a little to be desired, but it is still more appealing to me than the automatic.

I did a 4x4 and manual conversion on my truck and I used the fj cruiser tranny. 6th is .799 ratio

The ra60 tranny and variants is also a AY6. It was used in the V6 Cadillac CTS and solstice, possibly other vehicles too. I think the AY6 is the manufacturers name for the tranny. Made by Aisin.

    Russel,
Is there a good write-up on this? At some point I am either looking into a T-56, or perhaps this. Are the rest of the FJ gears the same as the Tacoma?
