Anyone worn out their factory 245/75-16s yet?

I have 10,000 miles on the factory Hankooks and they are at 6/32" tread. I think they are 10/32 new. Looks like 20,000 miles is gonna do them in. Ouch!

I bought a set of sr5 take off wheels with new 245-16 Toyo A31s on them which I'll put on after the Hankooks are done. I'm curious as to how many miles people have gotten out of the factory tires.

 

I still have my DunFLOPS still going will probably get to next winter got about 35k miles on them, and only rotated them once, will definetly replace with Michelin Defenders when the time comes.

 

I was gonna replace my HKs with Defenders but couldn't pass on the aluminum wheels with new Toyos for $400. Hope someone chimes in who's worn the Toyos out.

 

jup, I can possibly do the same and get a second hand set TRD offroad rims with the DunFLOPS still attached or just keep the steelies and add Defenders, Im still thinking which would be a better idea, the tires still have some life left on them.

 

Factory tires don’t last as long as aftermarket tires. I called Toyota about it when they recommended new tires at 24k miles. I was hoping for at least 50k. Then I traded it in on a new 4Runner and we got about 30k before those had to be replaced. Toyota stated that the OEM tires are built to different specs than aftermarket. For example, an OEM set of Goodyear wranglers will last about 30k and the aftermarket set of the same exact tire will last for 60k.....allegedly. Lol

 

If you’re at 6/32 you’ll be replacing them in 2-4k miles at best. IIRC, they’re trashed at 4/32 and coming into winter weather you’re not going to be wanting to hit much water or otherwise with tires that low.

My factory Dunlops were 3/32 at 21k miles. Rode nice and were dead silent, but bad traction and wore like a pencil eraser. Other than that, no complaints with them.

 

I think we have the same thing in mind. I gotta get the most out of the factory tread before a change but after running Michelins for years it's hard to go back to running cheapo tires that slip in the rain and wear out fast.

You're probably right but I'm hoping the tread wears a little slower since it gets more dense as the blocks wear down. I think the wear bars are at 2/32" so I really only have 4/32" usable tread left. Dang that ain't much.

 

Well, figure you’ve lost 7/32 in 10k, that’s 1/32 every 1.4k miles (roughly).

I didn’t experience any difference in wear speed, FWIW.

 

It's well known that factory/stock tires that come with new cars are rated/warranteed for roughly half the life of aftermarket tires.

Automakers have done this for decades. Must be for lowering the overall cost of a car. It's a mystery to me why a tire manufacturer would allow themselves to put out cheap tires for new cars and then think a consumer will stay with that brand.

OP - you are correct for questioning this. Sounds weird but it's "normal."

You can choose believe it or not. I’m telling the OP my experience which is why the post was created.

I’ve also worked for Michelin and all the OEM tires are run on a different assembly line with a different process using different products.....not sure why I’m telling you all this....I sometimes forget you know everything about everything.

I had the crappy stock Firestones on my SR5. Just after 10k miles in, I had a catastrophic blowout on the highway and immediately lost all pressure. I'm pretty sure it was a defect, but there's no way to tell with tires without sending them back, which wasn't worth my time.

I didn't realize how awful they were until I replaced them either. The KO2s stop faster, hold in turns better, and worked great when we had snow last week. I'd run away from the stock Firestones as soon as you have an excuse to.

 

jup, the Dunflops are real sketchy when it rains not much confidence in them, but they do well otherwise on dry pavement, I got the truck second hand from a dealer with 49k they put on a new set of the Dunflops 245/75/16 and I want to get the money out of them usually they don't sell very well if I took them off prematurely and got newer better skins and tried to get rid of them, probably just end up in the landfill. will keep them on till the end of next summer by then they will be cooked.

 

My tires will dry rot and the sidewalls crack before I wear the tread off them.

 

I wonder how the used tire market works...as in who buys used tires. I see used tire shops here and there and always wondered this.

Even when I got by on used beater cars I never thought about putting used tires.
