Hitchgate owners read!!

Buying a hitchgate solo high clearance in the next week or two and just had a question for you current owners. Obviously the license plate has to he relocated and I know Wilco has the product for that. But I want a different look/plate location. I like the look of the license plate being in the center of the spare tire. I found a bracket for that and wanted to know if anyone had tried it and/or if it works. If not, does anyone have this type of setup and how did you do it? Thanks guys!

I like the idea and i think it would work. The only thing i could see you needing to do would be to extend the license plate wiring along the back side of the bottom of the gate and then up the swing out arm. I was too cheap to buy wilco’s relocate bracket so i just built my own out of steel flat bar and angle steel. But mine is in the same location as wilco’s relocation bracket, so im not of much help as far as the different location goes. As far as i know, the only other member im familiar with that has a hitchgate right now on here is @Unchained 5150 , but he has wilco’s relocate bracket. I think there are more folks in the hitchgate thread that have one, but idk of many that are as active on TW.. ive never seen anyone relocate their plate to on the spare tire. You might try posting up in that thread as well..

Actually was just talking to @Unchained 5150 right before posting this haha. He said if I could get one that works, he was also going to get one himself

Wonder though how it would work having to swing out the Hitchgate? That is a lot of extra wiring.

 

True, that's the one thing I'm wondering with some thing like that. I wonder if that's why Wilco hasn't made that type of setup. Because on something like a wrangler, the entire rear trunk area swings out as opposed to just a tire holder.

I was gonna run my rear camera to the spare somehow, but realized it'd take a lot of cable to get there...

Hm. How did you attach it? I put a long screw through the factory mount and the license plate. Ended up breaking the plastic mount, but it's holding fast. I'd like to rework it to be more centerline, off to the side isn't helping me back up straight...

Did you drill, tap, screw it on?

 

Drilled 2 holes, used 2 plastic rounds spacers for height and viola

Looks like it has a few different mounting holes to align with the studs, but if it's made for a jeep (5x5 bolt pattern) it may not line up with a Tacomas 6x5.5 pattern. If it's only a 5" diameter from hole to hole you'll need to modify it to fit 5.5" spacing.
