No offence, but is this whole ‘TRD’ thing stupid?

I think this is a reasonable question.

I have seen 2nd gen TRDs with Steelies even. When I was shopping last year they had the TRD value edition that came stock with steelies

Thank you. It was actually meant as much, but then TW happened.

Let's look at TRD from Toyota's viewpoint. The more Tacoma trim options probably helps Toyota sell more units. There is lots of discussion on TW on which Tacoma someone should get. Everyone has their own preference. The days of Henry Ford saying you can get a Model T in any color as long as it is black are long gone.

I agree.....but I still struggle with the whole idea of “Toyota Racing” being an intrinsic part of my Tacoma. I just don’t see it, so it seems, for lack of a better word, silly.

Not certain what it means, but a Nismo brings bigger Brembo brakes, different shocks, different exhaust and around 50hp in the 370ZX series.

Ok, I agree...then let’s give Nissan ‘Nismo’......I see the lineage there......though maybe not on their Nismo pathfinder.

Well of course it is a crock (of "..it") when applied to any mass produced vehicle sold to the general public. It is marketing B.S. applied to make buyers feel "special" about their "wise decision" in spending more money to get additional eyewash and make their vehicle "stand-out" as compared to those purchased by others who could not afford "the very best"--or had brains enough to not buy into the bullshìt...

You know OP, it's kind of a good point, I think.

I suspect what was initially a racing skunkworks division got gobbled up by marketing. More units sold if TRD branded.

It's the way of the world.
But hey, I still think my Yeti cooler is pretty sweet!
