I did a search and couldnt come up with anything. I was wondering what makes a Tacoma limited. I was told that mine was a limited model, but it doesnt have the TRD package. It does have however push button 4 wheel drive, sunroof, chrome mirrors, electric antenna, power everything, and a interior that I havnt seen on many other first gen Tacomas.

Toyota did not have a Limited package until 1998. You have an SR5 back when SR5 meant something. On your truck there were several options for the asking. Push button 4WD is one of them. The sunroof and locking rear differential were also optional although in the case of the locking differential I think that 1997 was the first year you could get that ( I could be wrong though) SR5 would get you that snazzy interior and power mirrors, power antenna, full gauge package etc..

On my 1997 SR5 I have ABS, sunroof, locking rear differential as well as fender flares. I do not however have the push button 4WD, mine is manual

On SR5 4WD you would also get the auto locking hubs ( called ADD in Toyota speak)

In 1998 what you and I have was now called the Limited. In these years ( 1998-2004) You could recognize a Limited from the outside if it has power mirrors and inside, it would have the sport bucket seats.

On SR5 models 1998 and up you would have rather plain bucket seats. All SR5 models have buckets but other models could also have them if ordered that way.

A TRD model which came out in 1998 would have the different suspension ( bilstien and heavy duty springs) and of course the locking differential.

No Limited model as far as I know, came standard with the locking differential. You would have had to either order it by itself prior to 1998 or get it as part of the TRD package. To make things more confusing, you could get an SR5 from 1998 onwards with a sunroof but it would not necessarily be a limited.

The one thing that I have seen on ALL Limited models is that they all seem to have power mirrors. Same as the SR5 before 1998

I have a 1998 limited that has the push button locking rear differential. It was a $325 option. The moonroof was a 390.00 option. I have my window sticker from when the truck was new. :)

Thanks! Man you know your stuff 3.4. That is very interesting that they didnt make limited until 1998, makes sence though 96 Tacoma was fairly new. Ya my truck has everything you mentioned bucket seats and all. Very good to know though I would have felt ignorant whenever someone who had knowledge about Toyotas asked me what I had and I said limited 96 Tacoma lol Thanks for the help guys.:D

Either yours was ordered that way or someone got creative and stuck some SR5 emblems on your truck..

You can tell by the VIN number. Just call up your local dealer..

isn't the ADD an automatic differential disconnect? i didn't think it has anything to do with the hubs.
i know on my 03 trd the hubs are locked to the front axles all the time. i keep thinking of switching out the live hubs for a set of manual locking ones to save some wear and tare on the cv joints and maybe save some fuel along the way :)

i know there were years of tacomas and 4 runners that had electrically controlled hubs. but was that system also called ADD? if so. that effin stupid!

When I bought my first Tacoma in June of 1995 there was indeed a Limited 4X4 package.
Color matched Power Mirrors, power Ant. and a better Audio.

I too thought 98 was the first year the "electronic differential locker" was available on the TRD packages if the V6 was selected

One thing that made a LIMITED is these ugly 18" BBS aluminum wheels I have on mine. Somebody swapped them before I got the truck, I guess, as mine is just an SR5. I have been looking to find someone with some factory 5 spoke 16" (the shiny kind with the straight arms, not the silver with the swept, if that makes sense) to swap out with. No luck so far.
