    you also traded in for a pro. those have way more HP and are designed for racing and jumping over rivers.

    Thanks man but the Shelby is gone. Was not driving it as much as I should have. Guess I am getting a little older and just wasnt as fun anymore. I'll get into another toy eventually.

    White is one of my favorite colors. The blue stripes spoke 'Merica to me.

    How can people claim "the stock tune and shifting is fine" when even Toyota released fixes and updates? I've certainly gotten more used to how the truck wants to drive itself, but it is very unlike every other car or truck I have ever driven. In a bad way for me. I get that people may be fine with it but it's also definitely okay to not be. FWIW I disliked it after I had driven the truck for a while and before I came to TW. At least coming to TW confirmed I am not alone and has provided a fix (OVT).

    Understood. I've had a few Mustangs and am biding my time.....waiting for son to get done with college and then ole dad is gonna be adding something sporty. Lot's of want for a new Pony car. I'd really love to go with a convertible GT. My Tacoma is here to stay. If I add the Stang, too, then I may be more aggressive tire/rim/lift choices for my Taco.

    If your intent is to "defend" the stock tune or call ppl out for "wasting 800 bucks" on OVtune then have at it.

    And yes, I test drove the truck before I bought it.

    Here's what made the M/T OEM calibration a stinking pile IMO (my ECU version is 04B10 - the 1st incarnation):

    1. Terribly numb throttle. It was delayed so badly you literally had to hold the gas pedal down to get the RPM to rise enough for a half assed rev match. Starting out on a steep incline was an adventure, as you had to purposely goose the truck quite aggressively before reaching the friction point on your clutch stroke. FUUUCK. So if you didn't get it just right, the truck would - a. bog or b. suddenly give you a rush of torque after you were expecting it. I had to re-learn how to drive a stick in order to be reasonably effective in this truck. In any other vehicle, it's only been a quick adjustment to clutch friction point and engine power/gear ratios and good to go;

    2. Inconsistent throttle. Sometimes, depending on speed/load/moon phase/your wife's cycle the throttle would react decently quickly. Try it again for another rev match and ..nope. There was also this weird delay when upshifting and getting back into the throttle;

    3. Dangerous off the line momentary loss of power. This has nothing to do with the low end torque of the 2GR. What I'm talking about is this - You've just got the truck moving and need some power to get out into traffic or turn across a few lanes. You give it the beans and it literally noses over, chugs once or twice, and then decides to go - this could last up to a second or two. Now, don't present the argument that ppl shouldn't be driving like that. I will counter with the fact that I've never owned a vehicle that did this unless there was something wrong. To me, it felt like giving a carbureted engine throttle when the choke was still closed - BOG.

    4. Inconsistent power delivery. Lacking low/mid range torque and hugely obvious power band "snap" at ~3500 and again at ~4500RPM. I understand that this is a small V6 and without forced induction it's not going to be a torque monster. 2nd gear was almost useless in parking lots at low speed;

    5. Erratic idle when warmed up - A/C off and not putting any load on engine (ie steering input). It was just inexplicably rough at times.

    OVtune has gone a long way in drastically improving all of these things. Is it perfect? Nope:

    1. When stopped/clutch in, throttle is always crisp and probably as responsive as you can get with drive by wire. This alone made the truck infinitely easier to drive. I will admit though, that after you put some miles on the tune, some throttle numbness returns when at speed. It's still way more responsive and predictable than the stock tune though;

    2. Throttle consistency is vastly improved and the power delivery delay when upshifting is gone;

    3. No more dangerous bog. It's not a stump pulling LS V8, but at least you know what you're going to get;

    4. Low/mid range torque has been improved. Disclaimer: the 1st and only M/T dyno run didn't show increases per se, but did show a filled out torque curve below 3000RPM. You can see the torque gains in one of OV's earlier A/T dyno runs, using tune version 1.01B (IIRC): 30+lbs/ft, and all below the peak at 4600. In any case, low RPM cruising in 5th/6th is better and you can use 2nd in low speed situations much more than before. The truck is just "punchier" in that range. The 3500/4500 snap is still there in this version of the tune (remember, I'm 1.03 04B10). It was smoothed out noticeably in an earlier A/T version, but not this one;

    5. Idle is smooth. No weirdness when warmed up except for the aggressive RPM increase when A/C kicks in;

    TL;DR version - I'm happy with the tune and it fixed all the issues well enough that I now enjoy driving this thing. I no longer have to go through mental gymnastics to take off on a hill or pull off a rev match downshift worthy of a M/T driver with 35+ years experience.

    So go ahead, call all of this confirmation bias or quote someone who said their truck works fine on the stock calibration. Hell, I know of at least one guy who bought the tune and still hated his truck enough afterwards that he said he's thinking of trading it.

    This is all just IMO, but I'm willing to bet there are a "few" in agreement lol.

    I have to respectively disagree or better words, I personally have never had one of these issues crop up. Okay, number 4, I do feel the power snap in 1st or 2nd around 3500+ rpms, but others not once. Now, I have been driving stick for only 20 years, but man this is smoother & easier to drive than a 15 year old civic with 150k on it. Maybe they zapped the ECU between the 2016 and 2017? Anyhoo, trying not to be a dick, jsut I am suprised about your issues. My taco - 18000+mi and just over a year old.

    Cheers,

    There are certainly many unicorns out there I guess, but speaking from an AT owner of an early model year production '17 OR I experienced most of the issues cited above and don't deal w/ those same issues after the tune. I literally had the "oh SH#T" feeling way to many times when pulling out into heavy traffic where the truck just hesitated with traffic barreling toward me in both directions. I was consistently puzzled by the way the drive-by-wire throttle didn't actually equate to "more throttle" oftentimes which led me to have to mash it for ANYthing to happen - then when it did, it would dump rich and explode down a gear or 2 at which point it was already way high in the RPM band of, say, 3rd gear. In which scenario just a bit of throttle when I ASKED for it with my foot would have prevented this messy show of engineering...

    But many haven't had any or at least many issues and to those folks, many of us are envious! :)

    Yeah I guess I'm automatically in TW anti-flamer mode whenever I post stuff on here. Too many dicks and "experts" like to troll lol.

    I hear you man, and you're definitely not the first to post such a thing. In the beginning I would think, how the fuck could that guy say that? This thing literally drives like shit! But, Toyota has actually changed the M/T ECU version twice since the original - and since there are NO TSBs that involve ECU re-flash for driveability issues that I'm aware of, I believe we early adopters of the truck got the shaft. Even Mat from OVtune has had big problems making certain things work on 04B10 (the first version). 04B11 and 04B12, no issue. We'll probably never know what Toyota changed, but there are differences.
