Does it sound like one of the videos I posted?

And what are you using the Scanguage to measure temp correct?

I’m curious if it’s measuring from the coolant temp.

I cannot tell from the videos, and I use an Ultragauge and it measures the coolant temp.

Out of curiosity, What temp do you see rise? Nvm I see now. How much do you see it rise? I have never heard of this or seen it when my truck pings.

Have you tried installing a 170* thermostat? Some people have had success with that. When i did this back in the day, I didn't see a difference in pinging , but some have

I’m wondering if you are even experiencing ping if you’re not hearing it from the links. You should easily identify the ping, it’s plenty loud....sounds like a rattle, or marbles in a coffee can...I’m hearing the exact same thing at times when I’m on the highway and accelerate on a incline.

I find it’s audible but I’m not sure a camera could pick it up over exhaust. That video sounds like an exhaust leak/ping mixture possibly.

Well you have some experience with this.
I’m getting noticeable some ping on the highway, and maybe some more else where but I’m not 100% sure. I wanted to run Water/meth but now I’m thinking I should just be safe and go with the URD 7th.

Would I be able to achieve the exact same thing with the URD MAF/Timing and a water/meth or should I just go 7th. The 7th kit comes preprogrammed that should be good for my truck but I’d imagine I’d have to tune the piggyback myself if I ordered it separately. Which I don’t even want to try, I’d probably blow something up.

I should probably add that I reset my ECU after installing the new plugs and have less than 100 miles on them. I still need to give it several hundred miles before the ECU maps and, supposedly according to TRD, compensates for the S/C. Well see about that.

And are you still experiencing ping even with the. 7th?

I added a URD 7th Injector set up to my old S/C set up and still pinged around the same RPM range. That was just installing it as is. I wasn't as savvy at tuning back then so I didn't mess with it at all. But with the AIC FTC you should be able to adjust your timing to help eliminate the pinging you're experiencing

Damn, the 7th is just a bit to pricey. But I guess I’ll need it.

How are you dealing with ping now that you went turbo?

My 2.7 hasn't pinged at all. I've ran 320cc (10% larger than stock) injectors on the stock ecu, 550cc's with a Megasquirt, and now 440cc injectors back on the stock ECU with a GM knock sensor. I haven't had any pinging issues. One guy on here that has a S/C on his 2.7 has the same pinging issues as you guys have been describing. IDK if it is something that is more pronounced and common with S/C over turbos :notsure: Maybe due to the excess intake temps...IDK for sure.

Nevermind. I see that you went with the 2.7. Nice setup, I’d like to build a turbo truck
Wait. I was always Uber the impression that a turbo created way more heat than a S/C even with a intercooler. Am I wrong?

I’ve been reading online about water/meth vs intercoolers and water injections seems to have a greater cooling effect than an intercooler. Plus @1997tacomav6entioned that his S/C is cool to the touch even after running it hard.

maybe it has to do with turbos creating boost in higher RPMs than superchargers?

That may be a good explanation. The boost under 3k RPM when the ECU is in Closed Loop.

I don't know a lot about the turbo setup for the tacomas, but I had a Porsche turbo and that stock setup
was dam HOT under the hood all the time. You could fry bacon on the turbo and burn it quick:))

Can someone tell me what safe numbers are for the AFR? Normal driving, under boost, letting off the gas, etc.

This is my AFR under full boost with methonal kit with 12 as the perfect sweet spot all the way up the rpm range
Doesn't 't get any better than this!

Well, I think I’m gonna get the 7th injector. I’ve been pinging on the highway and have to keep it below 2000rpm to prevent it. Basically I’m going slow as hell. And I don’t even want to try to induce it.

On pump gas under boost you want it rich. 10.5 to 11.0. If on race gas, e85 or injecting you can go leaner say 12.0 to 12.5. As long as your not detonating of coarse.

Yeah, I’ll be running premium 93......maybe later down the road I’ll use a water/meth kit.
