Hi All. I have a 2016 TRD OffRoad. It is an early 2016 as I got it in Nov. of 2015. The first issue where it left me high and dry was a bad Crank Shaft positioning sensor last May at only 14,000 miles (and 12 hours into a road trip far from home). Fixed with new part. Then the third tail light leaked as though it was just a hole in the cab. Fixed with new fixture. Last month check engine light comes on at @24,000 miles. Bad Oxygen sensor. Took 3 weeks but eventually dealer replaced the sensor. Yesterday with only 40 miles from new oxygen sensor check engine light comes on. Today diagnosed with bad catalytic converter..... Now I'm waiting for that part. In the meantime they installed another crank shaft positioning sensor because it's now a recall and since it was repaired by an out of state dealer they wanted to make sure that it was the new part. Didn't cost me, so ok..... Now, this truck has under 25000 miles and I don't feel that it's reliable at all. I'm thinking about turning it in for a 2018. Anyone else have so many troubles with their truck, or is it just my luck??? Thanks

Some have had those issues, others have had a combination, however yours seems to be an extreme. As a 17' owner, the only issue I have had is some rattling here and there that got fixed with some felt. Sorry to hear about your troubles.

Welcome to the forum. When you sell 16K of something a month that weighs 5K lbs and has 5,400 parts, there is a good chance of a few of them having some problems. Every single thing you listed above has been discussed here many times so you are not the only one. Good luck and do what you think is right.

Unknown lift, maybe 2" I don't know how to ID it, and would rather set it back to stock.
Your VIN must have a very low sequence number based on your purchase date. Those Tacomas did have a recall for the CKP (Toyota-speak for crank position sensor) New vs old CKP has various identifying markings visible when removed that should be known to Toyota Dealership mechanics. The issues you describe are not unique to your Tacoma, there have been numerous issues identified in the Gen3 Tacoma. Not all of them have been identified, and you accumulated significantly greater mileage on yours than many other Tacoma owners have prior to these failures.
Spend a little time reading around on this forum on 2016 Tacomas and you'll learn a bit more about what others have been experiencing. I'm working through a few of these myself, pending resolution on one at this moment on another string yet to be updated with outcome. Low Fuel Rail pressure.

At this point I think you've blown your load on bad luck already don't think too much else can go wrong... have you checked your rear diff? lol.

The CPS is a known and common problem on a specific build date range, so now that that's fixed its something you can put behind you permanently.

The 3rd brake light leak is honestly just a bad luck Tacoma thing, has happened on plenty of 2nd gens, sucks but easy fix (should be free under warranty) and again not something you should really worry about in the future.

The 02 sensor is really the only out place problem that would have me bothered, the catalytic convertor failure doesn't surprise me as when your 02 sensor goes bad it can easily then foul your cat. That's the only problem here that would have me worried moving forward as whatever fouled your 02 sensor might happen again. Did they give you any idea what caused it to fail in the first place?? Did they just say the sensor itself was defective or was it fouled??

Almost seems like it could all be related CPS fails and makes it run like shit -> which tnen fouls the 02 sensor -> which then fouls the cat. If CPS failure can damage the 02 sensor then it would all make sense, it started with your CPS and now that all three have been replaced you should be gold. But if the CPS is totally unrelated then I'd be wanting a more solid answer before keeping the truck long term (100k+ miles)

As for trading in for a 2018 I don't think that would be a good move you might just end up fixing these same problems all over again (minus the CPS)

Many have had all that and more. Do some reading around here to learn of the variants.

    OTOH, many have no issues.

Just be grateful you don't have transmission or differential issues as you'll find many have had.

Do you really think the same truck that is two years newer will automagically be better?

While your issues are frustrating and time consuming for something so expensive, the only thing you list that would make me nervous is the O2 sensor/cat. And the loss of the sensor could have been a fluke, but of course likely created the cat issue.

Yep, cascading failure was likely the result of the bad CPS.

Now that you're moving into year three of ownership, start expecting regular wear items to start needing replacement. Bulbs burn out, tires get worn out, alignments go bad due to potholes, offroading etc....

I'd trade it in. I've never had any issues with mine and drove the hell out of it, right out of the gate. I have a '16 TRD OR 4X4 that I bought in Sept '15 but never had an issues with mine so far except for weather stripping that came loose on the drivers side. I put about 26k miles on it in the first 10 months, now sitting at about 56k on her now.

I had the issue with the Crank shaft positioning sensor. Had to print info off this website to convince dealer I wasn't a nut. Mine has 40 K on it with no new troubles.

I'm truly surprised that you are not posting to ask if you should trade for something other than a Tacoma. Most people would start putting lemon shaped signs in their yard badmouthing the brand and go get a Ford. Good for you.

I'm a first impression guy myself. If I buy a handgun that won't load right, it's gone. I'm not going to buy new springs or magazines to get it in good order. If I don' trust it now, I won' trust it tomorrow. In short, hello 2018.

Honestly, you're probably out of the woods with it now. I agree that the Catalytic Converter issue was probably related to the O2 sensor issue. I'd make sure the rear end was checked out per the recall and just drive it.

Trade it. Other vehicles don't have cps's nor cats to fail acquired from 3rd party vendors.
Next thing you know a tail light will go out.
