No offence, but is this whole ‘TRD’ thing stupid?

I think the OP is confused. "TRD" stands for:

    Totally

Well a lot of good came out of this question.......good times if nothing else. I’m glad I asked it. Mostly I’m happy to know SR5 means Sport Rally 5 (speed). Thanks everyone for their thoughts. :hattip:

Its just marketing.Technology from racing finds its way into your truck. Improving engine, intake, suspension etc.
I love the TRD package, logo and stickers
Yes the sr5 v6 is the same as the TRD's maybe they should have a different tune for the TRD'S

I do wish they'd actually used real bilsteins. my mechanic showed me a set of aftermarket bilstein 4600's, and the toyota/bilstein's on my TRD OR. ahhahah, the Toy ones were like 2/3rds the diameter pistons. truck is way firmer with the real 'steins. I was going to get 5100's but he convinced me that the ONLY difference was the 5100's were tuned for a mild lift and I'm not gonna lift my taco, ever. 4600 for 2g have the same rebound/compression rates as the 5100.

(looks around.... oh shit, this is the 3g section, ok NEVER mind, I'll shaddup now with my 6-speed 4.0...) I gotta stop picking up on threads from the 'latest' :D

Toyota spends a ton on racing, which gives it tremendous visibility, which means the "TRD" components of your truck – whether they add any actual off-road or performance benefits – DO add value in that they create a direct line between Toyota's marketing efforts (racing) and the desire to own an image-enhanced TRD product. More simply, by nature most people want to be a part of something cool and successful. Also, it's just a trim level. I didn't buy my TRD sport because I thought it was likely to acquit itself better on the Nurburgring, but I did like the fact that offered a bit more polish and amenities than a base model.

My TRD Cat Back exhaust sounds pretty damn sweet and I've got a whopping 5hp gain (give or take)

"Rice" sounds slightly racist to me. Maybe I'm being too sensitive. I happen to like rice. One of my school mates was Chinese . He ate a lot of rice (I still miss that damn rice. I've never been able to make as good for some reason). Anyway, he could carry your little Tacoma around in the bed of his badass lifted Ram 2500.

Now, if you're talking about someone bragging about their truck being some sort of race - ready machine because of a TRD badge, then you may have a point.

Drunk or not, that first hour and 10 pages or so of this thread was almost embarrassingly entertaining. Who knew "TRD" was so loaded?

We had engineers correcting grammar while English Lit. majors (me) told TRD cold air intake fart jokes!

btw. my personal conclusion... if you're going to heavily upgrade your taco (big wheels, suspension, underbelly armor, etc) do *NOT* get the fancy versions, start with the basic 4x4. why pay for expensive stuff you're going to toss?

SR5 has always been a form of trim level. Its place on the totem has just shifted over the years. In 1990 it was the top trim. In 2017 it is the bottom
Not true. My neighbor has a 91 5 speed but is not an sr5. Every bit of research I've done on it points to it being the power window option and that is why it is now considered pretty much the base model. It definitely should mean 5 speed though
    Because it has power windows

That actually seems sensible unless money isn't the issue. Plus there is the argument that you can get a pretty good price for brand new "TRD" parts.

Here's my question: if you buy a TRD OR and upgrade everything, do you remove the TRD badging?

It’s true. The sr5 designation was given to the first 5 speed Toyota pickups. It changed and became whatever Toyota wanted when the Tacoma took off. Didn’t have power windows either...

Sr5... the 5 meaning you now have the option of 5 gears instead of 4. Sr standing for sport rally. Zero to do with power windows.
