Maybe they do and those that should not wear them simply stretch them.

The mounting surface is already bent, according to the shop I just got it back from (had a lady turn left in front of me less than half a car length away) the frame is in good shape. So adding the plate will give that area more strength and assure it is square. The bumper I have will not allow the use of brackets that tie back to the frame. Just trying to give myself peace of mind. The bumper also needs to be shimmed to give enough clearance. Seems like solid plate beats stacking washers. Also removed all that foam

Ok. Now I understand more of your story. What bumper does not allow you to use ties back plates? Sounds like a design flaw in the bumper itself. Those plates help to keep the bumper from bending down upon a hit or while winching. If you are adding the plate to the ends you might consider plating the front of the Frame as well if you cannot use bolt on plates.

The money to replace the stock bumper covered the price of the infamous Ebay bumper. The gusset blocks the edge the brackets would wrap around. Plating the frame isn’t a bad idea, but then I have to buy a Dana 60 lol

Interesting. Never heard of that bumper so I will be curious to see it when you get it installed. If I were you and adding the plate to the front mounts, why not add some plate to the frame as far back as you can without removing more stuff? That should suffice to the side plate mounts.

I'd either figure out a way to fabricate a frame tie- in or don't ever winch from it. You'll just pull it off.

Sounds like a thermostat to me, that would also be the least expensive piece in the puzzle that could be bad.
