No offence, but is this whole ‘TRD’ thing stupid?

Yes. The TRD thing is stupid marketing schtick. But... don't fear - you will all be able to get your shitty TRD stickers, embroidered seat cushions, floor mats, wheel centers and red emblazoned air intake tubes for almost nothing soon. It's old hat. There is a new player in the ranks of Toyota's sporting hierarchy. Toyota has doubled down on internal branding divisions with the new TGR brand http://toyotagazooracing.com/ ... presumably because they just now discovered that the nickname TURD is not flattery. Or because when you think performance, Toyota wants you think "SNEEZE".

    Gazoo!

    Gazundheit.

You guys done did it now......

A pickup truck is a light duty truck having an enclosed cab and an open cargo area with low sides and tailgate.[1] Once a work tool with few creature comforts, in the 1950s consumers began purchasing pickups for lifestyle reasons and by the 1990s less than 15 percent of owners reported use in work as the pickup truck's primary purpose.[2] Today in North America, the pickup is mostly used like a passenger car[3] and accounts for about 18 per cent of total vehicles sold in the US.[4]

I actually did work in the dirt bike end of HRC. (Product development) But we were "home" to everything Honda did that was trying to go fast. I was gone by 1989. They were beginning to divide up into different groups about then.

This explanation does not fully cover why people I know bought them back in the 1990s, we were dirtbag climbers who slept in them and used them to get to trail heads. Same as the SUV, which was once primarily for hunters to get in and out of places rather than take kids to school in 1/2" of snow. So the definition of "work" needs clarification. Carrying a motorcycle or as a camper may not technically be "work" because it's recreational but I think it's a legitimate use. But the point is still valid, a lot of SUVs and pickups aren't even used for those tasks.

It must have been exciting working for Honda back then! The late 80s, early 90s solidified Honda’s place in the America automobile market. I’m way more enthusiastic about Honda products than I am about Toyota. Hopefully, I won’t get flamed for that admission.
