My TRD OR and its problems

Hey guys first time creating a thread here but wanted some feedback on my tacoma.
I have a 2017 TRD OR built in August of 2017. There are supposedly no current recalls on it according to VIN but I am experiencing several things. I have just over 5200 miles so far...

First, I have the ever famous rear end howl starting at around 52 and ending at 62 both accelerating and decelerating, but slightly louder when I am decelerating. It is not loud enough to hear over the radio or anything like that but it is there.

Second, increasingly so, the truck is both stalling and missing at times. at least three times now I have had it hiccup pulling out onto a 35mph street in the morning. It stalls for a split second and then gets going fine. Also, most of the time now, between 1000rpm and 2000 rpm if I step into the throttle it will start to miss. You can't hear it but can feel it, and today while I was getting onto the freeway at around 1300rpm it stalled when I stepped in to the throttle.

Third, slight air leak in the upper corner of the drivers side door. More noticeable after 40mph.

Finally, when I am slowing down the truck seems to shake, almost like it has bad rotors but I don't think it does. More noticeable the shaking is below 30mph when coming to a stop. Letting off the brakes stops it instantly.

Previous to this I had a 17 sr5 two wheel drive with none of the issues. I traded it in with 6k on it for this TRD OR. I am considering doing OVTunes thing on this truck, as I am tired of it shifting to 4th at 75mph when it really doesn't need too. I have owned many Toyota's over 23 years of driving and have had very few problems, but this truck is disappointing me big time.

Those are annoying problems to have on a new truck.

I have noticed inconsistent door seals by the sound during closure.

This is with an automatic, correct?

What is the dealers response? When you say miss, do you mean misfire?

Sorry to hear you have so many issues.

To clarify, are you looking for help fixing these issues, or are you more just noting issues with your truck?

Have you mentioned these issues to your dealer? I would think most items are covered under warranty.

I told the dealer this morning that I have had it stall and misfire on me several times. They were like, we will be happy to take a look at it. They asked if the CEL had come on, which it hasn't. I plan to make an appointment with Toyota and list the issues.

Probably not a misfire, it's just a combination of the delay from the electronic throttle and the time it takes the transmission to react.

I've noticed these to be the issue on 3rd Gens with the auto. Drive by wire lag + transmission map equals like a 1 second delay. Doesn't seem very long but it sure is very, very noticeable.

Usually, it happens to me when the truck is A) about to shift and B) when I press the accelerator at the same time. It's that odd moment when the truck wants to shift to a higher gear but I'm also trying to faster.

One of the quirks of the truck I suppose. Not a big deal, honestly.

Not a big deal until you suddenly need power to either overtake, get out of someone's way, etc... and you experience that 1 second delay.

I've experienced most of these issues on my '17 OR that I now have 22k on but the first 10k were pretty nightmarish...

    - The shaking/shuddering you mention is something I had to a T. I had a field tech spend all day w/ my truck for many issues and this is the ONE thing they fixed and was due to a warped rear drum which was replaced under warranty.
    - Missing, yes there is something that often "feels" like a miss that is just transmission or TC related. But, these trucks to MISFIRE as a normal characteristic - whether you feel it or not the prevalence of misfires is unlike anything I've seen. I'd suggest you get an OBD2 device (I use Carista) along with an app like Torque (Andriod) or OBD Fusion (iOS) so you can actually see what's happening. If indeed you are feeling misfires this would generally mean you have multiple cylinders misfiring concurrently b/c one single cylinder misfire generally isn't noticeable when the other 5 pick up the slack (in my experience anyway). The "slight miss" feeling many have commented on, for me, went mostly away when I ran premium fuel but I still log intermittent misfires (as many as 8-10 on a 15 mile driving cycle - not normal... but Toyota says it is).
    - Roughness in idle, inconsistency in engine performance, etc., - bad CKP sensor. Mine wasn't on recall, but replacing it was absolutely Night and Day that's impossible to deny. This replacement and the tune have been the most significant fixes for the truck aside from having to retorque everything / fill everything that wasn't put together properly at the factory

I somehow skirted the howl and the door leaks some have commented on, but was shipped a $35k truck with a dry transmission, crappy tune, warped drum, dry u-joints, underfilled rear diff, u-bolts only finger tight (like 10 lbs if that...), buzzing / vibrating steering wheel/floorboard/throttle, hesitations galore on take-off. Really was a miserable first 6 months of ownership. But the answers to most problems can be found on here so if you're willing to stick with it you can resolve most of it.

Edit: And to this day my truck has zero recalls and I had to beg and print out any TSBs to get my dealer to acknowledge and take action...

I've noticed this as well...it did it to me today as a matter of fact. The power delivery is very odd on these vehicles but likely not an "issue" just...odd.

If you would be texting while driving (like everybody else), you would not notice all those problems. So, stop paying attention to/while driving and grab the phone or play with the make-up kit crap.

Pretty sad indeed - and I was certain by waiting until the 2nd year of the gen I'd be mostly problem free but I was wrong.... my fault as I should have given this truck a beating on a multiple, longer test drives before getting caught up in the hype and body styling, prepurchasing a ton of $ mods before I had the truck, but alas I was committed and wasn't prepared to lose a bunch of money and the dealer ignored most of my problems. In the end, I am now pretty happy with the truck and it is genuinely fun to drive - but occasionally I drive a friend's new T4R Pro and remember how a real motor / tranny feels to drive... lol

assuming you have a automatic drive with ECT on, problem solved as far as stalling or however you described it. if that works for you the next thing to do is get the ECT 'on all the time " mod.

Yes. Those issues would be annoying. I have a 2017 sr5 v6. Have not a problem. When I bought mine ( a loan ). I knew one of the salesman through a military connection. Didn’t really know him personally. But I test drove Trd OR. Loved the ride. He was not my salesman. But he came over and told my salesman bring around the Black sr5 with the red inside, the accents. I asked my guy why he did that. The answer was he knows this truck and ran the vin for potential problems - none. Recalls and so forth. I look on the back window and see a white dot. Than saw another on passenger front headlight. Asked why these marks. Was put there from someone, his reply was this truck got the royal treatment on an inspection. POD - full checkup from fluids to front to back. Up and down. I ran the vin myself and sure enough no recalls. I’m not getting any problems from slipping tranny, shuddering slightly coming to a stop. No howling noises. Zero problems thank god. So far anyway. No stalling on freeway. All these complaints. Stunning really from a number 1 selling midsize truck. So, whatever the dealership did- they did it right. And my guy knew something about this truck and did me right. If something happens I’ll keep everyone posted. Those little white dots if I didn’t spot them and ask I surely would not have known anything more about the truck.

Could the misfire just be an unfimiliar feel with the atkinson cycle motor?

I'm in the shop on the 4th for new leafs springs...

When I slow down, the truck shakes... Sometimes its pretty bad.. Apparently the new leafs put the axle on a different pitch to adjust the pinion angle..

Also, I'm getting a new steering damper..

Other than this, its a good unit.

    Update.
The misfire is getting much worse. Now it’s missing between 1k rpm and 2k rpm almost all the time. The other day when getting onto the freeway I stepped on it a bit and it stalled for a split second, like a dead miss and then got going. Even my friend has noticed it’s running like crap.

The shaking when decelerating is also getting worse. Hoping to get it in on the 2nd to have these issues resolved. I’m guessing either my leafs or bad or I have a warped dear drum. And I’m guessing my cps is faulty.

    5400 miles now.

Mine goes in on the 2nd for the misfire and shaking while slowing down. Today after idling for 30 mins and took off down the road and it stumbled around very badly. Took some doing to get it to run right. Almost like it had loaded up...
