100 octane

As anyone used 100 octane fuel in a taco with the 4.0 v6? They call it racing fuel. Texaco down the road sells for $6.99 a gallon if you're wondering.

 

I took my taco to my local track one day and put 100 in. I got from the airport I fly out of. It is cheaper at the airports but still expensive... like $5.75 was the best I ever saw it.

I wouldn't use it normally though. Not worth it.

It will put out a few more hp's but other than that nothing special.

 

21 gal X $6.99 = $146.79. LOL!

Great for track use, though.

On an N/A engine it's pretty much a waste of money and you're not going to notice a difference. Unless your compression and timing are adjusted for it I wouldn't bother.

 

Is the race fuel leaded or unleaded?

 

Should be unleaded, leaded would cause some problems with prolonged use. Love the smell of race fuel.

 

I use Sunoco 104 UL with every tank. Runs good.

 

Fat Tuesday on South Street has 190 Octane.

 

The use of leaded fuel will clog the CATS and sensors. It shouldn't be used. That includes anything "low lead" that you might get at an airport (AVGAS).

 

I asked this question because I have a older Motorcycle that would love a taste of leaded gas. Just a cup full in each tank would really help protect the valves. Have not been able to find any in the KC metro area. If any of the KC members know of a location, that info would be greatly appreciated. Lead substitute just are not the same.

 

As Chris mentioned, octane doesn't make power. It just makes gasoline less explosive so it doesn't destroy high compression or radically timed engines. If your engine pings you probably need more octane. If it doesn't you're wasting money buying it.

The exception, of course, is on engines with electronic knock sensors, and I don't know if the Tacoma has these. Those engines will back off the timing if the engine pings, and so will certainly perform better with more octane (than whatever amount is allowing the engine to ping.).

In the old days you'd buy high octane once in a while just because it also contained additives that would help clean water and crud from the fuel system. Regular gasolines didn't have them.

Nowadays, with the wide adoption of fuel injection, I believe that virtually all gasoline sold has some of these additives.

Anyhow, does anyone know if the Tacomas have electronic knock sensors on the engine?

Looks like Toyota is putting knock sensors in the Camry v6 and the v8 trucks/suvs but not in the Tacoma. My last car (VW GTI 1.8T) had a knock sensor and if I dared run regular it retarded the timing and eliminated almost any boost. Felt like I was driving a low compression POS. But unless I remapped the computer it would not increase boost or timing beyond what it did at premium. It's a huge waste of money unless as said before you're running a blower and can adjust boost and timing.

 

Thats one of the cheapest and most effective power boost.

 

Hmmm..not that much of an increase really. I kind of doubt I'd notice the difference in my daily driving.
