Been using high mileage castrol for the last 35k miles. Well, they were out for my last oil change so I put in regular dino. Fast forward 3 weeks and I noticed oil seeping out all around the pan seal. Not enough to drip yet but a large area none the less. Never any seepage before.
Drained and refilled with the hm. Hoping the seals swell back up.

You made me think of my neighbor who has to have everything done yesterday. I always have an extra case of oil in my shop cause I know I won’t be able to find it if I wait till its time to change the oil.

I remember freaking out when the price of a quart of oil went up to 55 cents per quart. (I know, that probably dates me a little). At todays stupid ridiculous prices, it pays to find cases on sale and keep a good supply of oil on hand.

Not a bad idea. There are other places I could have gone but didn't think it would cause an issue. Lesson learned.

He probably doesn't know the oil companies put additives to make the seals swell up. High mileage just has more additives in it.

^^^^^ Absolutely correct! That's part of what makes it a "high mileage" oil.

Could you explain why going back to "regular" oil caused the pan seal to leak?

I'm pretty sure the factory seal on the oil pan is FIPG and not a regular gasket.

that doesn't explain why when he stopped using it they leaked. youre saying they contract the second you stop using them? don't think so.

If you got leaks with synthetic, fix the leaks.

If you got leaks with regular oil, fix the leaks.

A new pan gasket is low cost and easy too install.

If it's leaking now it was going to leak anyway. The oil type wouldn't make a difference.

Last night it snowed a foot while I was asleep. Now I have to shovel snow. I'm not sleeping tonight, because I don't want to shovel tomorrow.

That went through my mind, too. There's nothing to swell or shrink with RTV. I dunno if or how there's a connection.

    Coincidental.

The only difference between high mileage and not are the additives.

It will not make your oil leak. It would have done that even if you stuck to your typical oil type.

Fix the leak. It will all be OK.
