Looking to purchase my first Tacoma this week. I'm torn between the SR5 and TRD Sport.
It will be 2x4 either way. I live in Texas and don't need 4x4, so any "off road capabilities" that a Sport would offer aren't important to me.

So help me... pros and cons? Suggestions?

2018 TRD Sport, Inferno, w/tech package
Factory Blackout package, Soft roll up bed cover, Cheap seat covers, Front and rear dash cam, AVS in channel vent visors
Sport has entune premium with nav, push button start with smart entry, painted bumpers, skewp, sport wheels, sport tuned suspension(read as tight suspension), qi wirelesss charger, power sliding rear window(if 2017 or above).
If looking at 2018 packages have changed and you can get leather in the Sport.

Lots of threads on this general topic

For those who know they will be changing out suspension and stuff anyway, SR5 makes a more budget friendly entry point.

For those who like gadgets/trinkets/creature comfort, higher end models make them happy, even though they may toss a lot of parts too.

You should take fairly long test drives of both. Feed back around here have many comments on seats, suspension differences, glare and visibility issues with the hood scoop, etc.

To me, it's a truck, and that means local use or 4-5 hrs tops. So I don't care about luxo features.

In terms of future value, it all depends on how long you keep it and how hard you use it. In 20 years with 200k on them, either model will be just an old high mileage truck. In fact, I predict less gee whiz stuff will be better, because it's less stuff to keep working.

Only you can decide what's right for you.

Both good comments/suggestions ^^^. I personally would get the Sport. Full disclosure, I actually got a Tundra less than two months ago since I am toting the fam around quite frequently and having that extra space is awesome. While I have 4x4 it is not a necessity since it will help with the resale value even though I plan on keeping it forever. Anyways, I had my heart set o a TRD Sport Tacoma with the tech package. I got away from that and relized any Sport model is great, especially with the 4x4 capabilities. I would say go for it and get the Sports since what is a couple thousands dollars anywaysif you can spend it.

I was set on a SR5. I preferred the wheels and grille on the SR5 and could live without the options featured on the TRD Sport. It was my wife who bumped me up to the TRD Sport arguing it was only a few thousands more and had the latest, greatest tech features compared to the SR5s I was looking at. When in doubt, my wife always chooses to go with the higher trim. She pushes me up the trim levels more than the salespersons we’ve dealt with. I should know that by now, but obviously I haven’t learned yet. Looking back, I don’t have any regrets about going with the TRD Sport over the SR5.

The Sport does nothing for me, so I would get the SR5 and save some cash. (Actually would get an SR).

If you’re considering the Sport then just get the OR. Price is basically the same but you get a rear locker and some other minor stuff with the OR.

I was in the same boat back in April and ended up getting the Sport. The SR5 isn't that big of a savings - deals can be found on the sport as more people are looking for the Offroad. The SR5 was only about $1500 less if I recall.

The Sport has the Upgraded Radio (which is pretty good), the power slider rear window (which I didn't know I wanted till I got it....), Heated Mirrors (nice on a foggy morning), Keyless start (which I could do without), and the outlet in the bed.... useful every now and then. The 17" wheels are a little nicer than the stock SR5.. ...in fact the stock SR5 are the same wheels I had on my 2007 SR5.

At any rate I think the advice above is good. If you are going to modify the heck out of it - the SR5 might make sense, but if you can still get within $1500 of the SR5... I'd go that route.

I dunno. I mean... Sport looks a lot nicer, and has nicer features. Clearly you want to drive off the lot with the cooler truck. It's the Sport. If the difference in price isn't going to force you to eat the neighbor's dog (or Top Ramen), then buy it.

And some people say the SR5 looks better than the Sport. Some people think a Camry looks better than a C-Class. Some people like spilling coffee on themselves.

Remember, only get a "TRD" branded Taco if you are into hard core racing.

You can read all about it here:

More than happy with my 18 DC 4x2 6" I was in the same boat as you. I looked at the TRD's package and didn't want fake hood scoops, had that on my XRunner and never really liked it. I don't need OR suspension or locker rear ends or bed covers. This is my work/play truck I have yet to take it to the desert to go dirt bikin, been to damn busy workin. I only have 400 some odd miles on it but she handles the canyons with no complaints. She is quite runs and shifts smooth and feels solid when driving. She has plenty of giddyup. I bought the middle package with Nav back up sonar premium audio and satin rims and do not regret my purchase. paid 34,400.01 T&L, OTD.

If you have any questions I'll be more than happy to reply. I see TRD's everywhere with short beds here in LA, but no SR5 LB's. Yea I feel special lol.DSC_0007.jpg DSC_0009.jpg

Thanks man, more than happy with the purchase. Honestly I probably won't do anything to it there's nothing that I don't like on it. I did etch the driver side rear window. EZ fix bought a Kawasaki dragon sticker heck it needed something on there anyway.

Yeah I was just thinking of the tech stuff the sport comes with, DRL, wireless charging, power sliding window, push button start, yeah the hood scoop is iffy, just for looks like most scoops are. A vehicle under 40 grand that has a functional scoop is the Subarus, and I don't know about yours but mine didn't come with fender flares and I do regret that also. But I guess I could always had those later.

If I was not so set on a manual, I would have looked at the SR5. I love my Sport and would not trade it, but a few thousand & lower payment would be nice. I personally do not think the suspension is tight, but I have never been in a off-road, so cannot honestly compare it. Looking back, I would have looked at the off-road closer, seems you get a bit more for your buck - ie rocker, A-trac, etc...
