try mixing acetone and automatic transmission fluid (50/50 mix) that should cut through the rust. another option is if you have a little torch try to heat it up a bit then tap it with a hammer.

yeah me I'd def replace those pads and rotors, they've seen the end of any sort of useful life. I don't mess around with something that stops a 5,000lb truck.

Why cant New England just stop using salt.... plenty of other mountainous and wintery areas don't use salt and do just fine.... salt is just so destructive to vehicles and roads.

I vote just replace the whole caliper. Just have to disconnect the brake fluid like an be you're good to go above and beyond what your have to do for pads/ rotors anyways. I'd be willing to bet the piston seals are junk

another reason is it changes material properties of the material. doing the hot dip galvanized can sometimes cause the metal to become more brittle and prone to cracking. also cost of having a place tool up to facilitate something like a million frames a year would be costly. galvanizing is a hazardous process and isn't very friendly to johnny polar bear. people doing the work have to have all kinds of special safety gear. and again it does go back to if you make something to indestructible then most people wont go out and replace it.

another thing is once you galvanize it you can never weld on it, so could never do any frame repairs

I'd guess someone in the statehouse had a relation with a vested interest in the salt/sand/ deicing chemical business.... But that's just me.

    Also, think of the children

Are you sure about the welding? I mean welding on it creates some terrible fumes so you should wear a powered air purifying unit (ArcOne has one...shameless plug) but as far as being able to you can weld it.

you can weld it, but say a big corp like GM or Ford goes and does it on a huge scale it makes things a bit more challenging due to the fumes. Even using robot welders they still need to get rid of the fumes some how. And if you did the coating after you welded everything on you have that issue of getting an even coating inside and such.

Don't get me wrong it would be awesome if there was something like this. My family's business outfits town highway departments with plows and sanders and such and we start galvanizing all of our sander screens. Shit stands up better and you don't have to worry about paint blowing off and shit. And we actually reduced costs by doing this. Some dump body sub frames are now being galvanized. But those are nice easy straight C-Channel frames.

I think the biggest kick back for doing this on vehicle frames is the size of the facility required to dip frames and still produce them at the required rate, and then also the environmental impact of such a place. The E-Coating that they use now works well, until you get a compromised section and then its all over. Frames todays are thinner walled (but higher strength steel) and so you have less material you can loose. On top of that there is so much aluminum in cars now you get a lot of corrosion between the steel and aluminum (electrolysis) since the dissimilar metals really don't like each other.

It can't be too horrible to do it because my bro in laws Land Rover Series II that had a frame off restoration got a hot dipped galvanized frame. Course that's a $75k 1962 Land Rover... so I guess it's not cheap.

    Home sick today.

Got my ceremonial first good cold of the season which knocked me on my face a bit. Normally I just power through it, but I've got some PTO to burn and don't feel like letting it knock me down so I'm sick for the holidays.
