Actually knock/detonation/pinging is not pre ignition. They are completely different phenomenon. Just incase some one gets confused.

Most knock cannot be heard with the naked ear. If you can hear and feel the pinging your in very dangerous territory.

But yes they both can be heard. I just don't want people thinking pre ignition is detonation as they are not the same. Just better to be informed.

I always thought it was funny how the way they tell you to tune these trucks for pinging is to listen for it and in whatever areas you hear it, retard the timing in those areas. Basically you have to risk damage in order to tune it. These 5vz’s are tough though and can apparently handle even audible ping to some extent (mine will still do it under the right circumstances). I’m surprised I don’t see more threads on blown engines based on how these engines ping with the SC.

I got a knock light to try to help catch the ping that can’t be heard. Not sure how much I trust it though.

I gapped them to .043, read on custom tacos to do that. Then gapped them back....same thing.

Everyone making me super paranoid with the ping blowing engines. It depends on who you hear it from. I’ve read online from various sources that some degree of ping is actually normal...my last truck actually pinged for years with no problems. But better safe than sorry.

Until I get the 7th injector kit should I just put the stock plugs back in and take the belt off the S/C? That’s what I might do. I don’t want to try and test the stock plugs again. Thats probably more dangerous than running it like it is. The more heat the greater the chance for preignition which is death for a motor.

Just to be clear ping and preignition are two different things. Ping is when you get multiple detonations when the plug sparks. (Not sure how timing plays into that) Preignition is where excessive heat creates a detonation before the piston is at full compression. Preignition is almost certainly death. Here’s a good explanation.

i don’t think you can just take off the sc belt. Why not just put the stock plugs back in and take it easy until you get the 7th?

I’ve been taking it super easy as it is. I could try that. But the video is a good reason why IDK if I want to try that.

I think you should be fine as long as you just take it easy. It shouldn’t ping. Do you have a boost gauge? I got to a point where I could watch my boost gauge and rpms and know when it would want to ping. So I could avoid it if I need to.

This is how I always understood the ping stuff

    BBC09BAC-7B35-47EA-9CE4-7EEA5800E517.jpg

Most of us with the SC should be experiencing spark knock which is cured by retarding the timing with the 7th injector kit piggyback ecu.

Not trying to argue that pinging is bad. But whats puzzling to me is that the actual TRD manual for this says “you may hear ping for a second” also stating that it should go away after a few hundred miles

I’m not disagreeing with this. If it were “detonation” heaps of people would have blown their engines.....like I said before TRD recommended against doing any sort of mods past the S/C itself.

If you are curious call Magnuson or Jon Bond (super nice guy) at JonBond supercharger rebuild service. They are both very adamant that you don’t need to do anything extra on the 3.4.....now why that is I’ll never know.

It's because it's low boost and power. Now if running 30psi and making 500 crank hp audible pinging would be the end of the motor.

No. I said your in dangerous territory. Have you thought of meth injection over the 7th injector? But like stated above since it's spark knock and not detonating it's not as bad.

Originally yes. But changed my mind because I’d like to have the URD MAF/Timing sensor as well. I would be paying a bit more for meth and the piggyback so I just got the 7th. Waiting on it to ship. It could be a week or two.....

Gadget told me I could take the belt off and run stock. Might do that until I get the 7th.
