Ignore all these assholes telling you to put it in first, curb your wheels, and set the parking brake. That is a lot to remember.

Just park at the bottom of the hill next time.

Carry a couple pieces of firewood in the bed. When you get out toss them in front/behind the wheels.

I see lots of ummmm "boaters" doing basically the same thing on a boat ramp that's inclined. They allow the transmission to take all the brunt of the truck and boat weight. When retrieving the boat after trailering they'll pop it into drive with no parking brake on. Had a fishin bud who would do it all the time on my taco until after explaining and showing him several times I just gave up and told him he couldn't drive my truck out. Simple... back trailer in water, with foot on manual brake put tranny in park or 1st gear (shut off motor if manual tranny), apply parking brake, load boat, put tranny in 1st gear ( at this point the brake is holding all the weight not you 1st gear), apply enough gas to take the weight off the brake, release parking brake and slowly crawl up ramp with zero transmission wear and tear. Parking break... there for a reason

Toyota parking brakes tend to not function after about 5 years in a salt belt state. The bellcranks rust to the backing plate pivot in very short order. Most of my friends drive late model Toyota stuff and none have functioning parking brakes.

Just throw it in first or reverse and call it a day.

I like to attach cables to my firewood and run them up to the cab so I can pull them out while seated. If only there were an easier way.

I’ve always put my manual truck in first gear when parked and pull the e brake because that’s the way I was taught. The thought never crossed my mind to put it into any other gear...:notsure:

Once it seizes up, you're not normally going to get it to move again. Brakes then have to come apart, buy new bellcranks from Toyota and then pray that you can get the cable out of the old ones. Pain the ass.

Way easier to just park in 1st or reverse.

I had my parking brake freeze up one time so badly that I broke it getting it free to drive home after work. I had to do this for a few days until all I got all the parts and time to rebuild them. What a PITA this is with a tired engine. You have to time your exit just right so you're not chasing the truck if you happen to stop the engine at compression on the cylinder with the bad rings. Once the first cylinder gives up and the truck gain momentum your done.

Assuming you have manual. Park your truck put it in Neutral, then apply the parking/e brake, let it drift and catch THEN put it in any gear you choose. Doing this method when parking puts ZERO strain on your gears or transmission. MUCH easier to replace the brake over gears or a tranny.....OLD school trucker showed me this method I never park any other way

Parking with a load on the transmission on a hill is way less strain that it would see driving up the hill. Not going to hurt the trans parking in gear

I was taught to use 1st pointed uphill and reverse if pointed downhill.

I've never fully understood why but I believe it's got to do with wanting the drivetrain to force the engine backwards if the truck creeps. The only thing I can think is perhaps it's more likely the inertia makes an engine comes to rest with the pistons at or past TDC and therefore are more resistant to being pushed back into compression. Just my theory.

I don't normally tell people that they're stupid, but shit man do you not understand the risk that you're taking? There is nothing wrong with your transmission. The tranmission is not meant as a parking aid. Use some blocks of wood as wheel blocks before your death trap hurts someone if you can't be bothered to fix your parking brake. This is ridiculous.

This one is pretty obvious. Also, this is basic drivers education.

You are unwise to use your parking brake in cold honestly. Especially drum style parking brakes have a tendency to freeze solid when its nasty cold leaving you stranded.
