Well, I pulled the trigger today on a new NAPA CV axle. I hope to gawd that it holds up a lot better than the other ones. :fingerscrossed:

If they had full chromo versions I would probably think about it, but the only ones I know about that have chromo parts are those Lotus axles Toytech sells for $500/ea and from what I understand only the birfield cages and inner races are chromo while the rest of it is just normal steel and they're not lifetime warrantied. The factory axle I popped didn't break at the brif. It exploded the stub axle and took out the lockout with it. So all else being equal, I'd rather snap the brif and only have to replace the CV than snap the stub axle and end up having to replace the axle and the hub.

Of course, if they did have full chromo CV axles for my truck, then I'd probably end up destroying the ring and pinion or tearing the carrier in half which would be way more expensive to replace. I just want something that will hold up better than the previous axles I was using, but still fails at the brif before it pops the stub axle.

Edit: I don't know if it means anything, but the NAPA axle looks a lot more like the factory axle than the other brand. That makes me cautiously hopeful that it will hold up better. However, time will tell. :fingerscrossed:

Whenever the weakest link is the cheapest and easiest part to replace, you know the engineers designed it right.

If I was going to design one, I think I'd make the birfield cup/stub axle, birfield cage and inner race, and the inner cup/axle out of chromo. The half shaft would remain steel with maybe a failure point machined into it so it breaks clean and a PVC sleeve over it so when it does fail it would still hold the broken ends in alignment so you could get to somewhere to replace it without beating the crap out of your suspension with the broken ends flopping around. I'm not an engineer, but it seems like that would be an ideal setup so all you'd have to replace is the halfshaft if it failed while protecting the more expensive parts.

I've been eyeballing the little Baofeng units pretty hard. Today I started scouting out locations for upcoming HAM license exams. I found a few relatively close in January. Already downloaded a study guide app to start taking practice tests. I've had the HAM Radio for Dummies book since 2012 or so. Maybe I should finish reading it.

find a HAM radio license study guide and look over that. Once you feel confident with that, find a local area that administers the test, they only do in person tests. once you do that and pass it, you get your license and can use a HAM radio

I've watched a few of this guys videos. He isn't a HAM snob and is promoting getting more people involved and licensed.

Also, THIS LINK has information about licensing, classes, and exams.
