Painting Emblems

Some of my emblems like the one in the picture are flaking. Anyone know the best way to help the rest of the chrome plating come off? I want to black out my emblems but don’t want them to look like . Thanks in advance.

 

Depending on what you're coating them with you probably don't need to strip them.

I plastidipped mine in 2014 or so and they held up ok given the amount of effort invested. They are chalky and faded after plenty of Texas and Colorado sun, though.

 

I thought about plasti dip. I’ve done that on another car before. I just don’t want to see uneven lines in the finished product. I’ll probably end up using the same paint I used in my fender flares.

 

I pulled mine off and sanded them a little bit. Painted them flat black, clear coat and stuck them back on. Some where on here there is someone that has some kind of mixture to get the chrome off. Good luck.

 

I plan on sanding them. Just not sure if sanding will smooth out the transition from plastic to chrome enough. Thanks though. Hopefully I’ll find that mixture.

 

How are they held on?

 

Just painted mine, hit them with a heat gun and slid fishing line behind to slice them off, removed the adhesive residue from the truck with

this, and used double sided tape to reapply.

 

Yeah. Just like lukester 78 said.There is a thread on here gives a step by step how to. If I new how to do it i would put the link to it below, not that computer savy. Look up blacking out emblems in the search box. I left the adhesive on the pickup and put blue masking tape over it to protect it from dirt while I painted emblems. When I was ready to go back on just heated up the adhesive again with heat gun and stuck them back on.

Knowing that I may just remove mine altogether. Maybe

 

2nd the plastidip...I just did all mine about 6 months ago and took me like an hour and I'm pretty happy with the results. Just look up a tutorial on youtube for plastidipping emblems. I imagine one day it might start peeling but it hasn't shown any signs of giving up yet.

 

I removed all of my emblems and rubbed all the glue off with my fingers.

 

Take them off, just remember if your paint is faded they might end up looking like ghost letters in the paint. I took mine off and you can still see them. If it's a lighter color shouldn't be bad

 

I have the same problem as OP, but I don't want to paint them black. Is there a way of restoring the ones I have, or is it better to just buy new ones?

 

They’re made of Silicone so not much you can do with them.

 

2017 is different, they are all raised emblems

usually when you take off the 1st Gen emblems you trash them. mostly cause they are peeling and junk at that point

 

then again you can always take them off and get Vinyl replacements to put back on. can get any color you want too

I just sanded mine and painted them and I repaired my door latch with JB weld and painted it too.
