I'm thinking of putting reverse lights in my back bumper for when plowing snow I can see when I back up. Does anyone know what I can put on the bumper so it doesnt rust when I cut the holes ?

I’d say black touch up paint would be best

If you saw the pre-paint steps that the factory puts your body (and bumpers) through before painting (or plating), you'd be utterly amazed. And it's those steps that are the most critical to preventing rust. Cutting holes in the bumper basically throws all of that right out the window. There's literally nothing you can do you at home to even come close to duplicating the process or the protection it affords. Folks who don't live in areas where we use road salt have no idea how corrosive (and destructive) that salt really is. The best way to prevent that rust is to avoid breaking through the finished surface.

Personally - and I plow (with a different truck) - I'd never cut holes in my bumper for backup lights.

How about just mount some lights on your bed rails near the tailgate?

My old 2005 oem bumper was rusted to shit on the inside. So I didn't have much to loose.
Actually if I didn't do the cut out flush reverse lights..I would have never seen the rust or bothered to repainted it.

Is there a bracket behind that I have to watch out for? What distance from the edge should I shoot for when cutting

one of my favorite mods, u wont regret it. Measure twice cut once. tie into the yellow wire off the trailer plug and they will come on automatically in reverse

I suggest using painter's tape to extend the frame rails to the back of the bumper. I didn't do that and I can't use 1 of the mounting holes because it is too close to the frame rail. Here's mine:

Not in the bumper, rather using existing holes in the bumper.

I quick spliced right into the reverse wires on my led tail lights. Make sure you measure like 20 times, watch out for the downward angle of the bumper too so its properly flush. And if you have a tow package its a real cunt to tighten those pod bolts down lemme tell ya. I did two snug and the others hand tight and they dont go anywhere. Best you could do for rust would be priming, painting, and maybe seal with with caulking or silicone? Then jam the pod in! If they don't look even up close when you are done just take a few steps back and they are just fine.
