    They are talking about water getter mg in the mechanism and freezing. I don't think lube would prevent that.

    That's a good way to rip the shift linkage apart. I know from experience lol. I was on a trail in Alaska in my Nissan frontier and there was no room to turn around at the end of the trail so in order to turn around I had to push some trees (there was no way I was going to back all the way out of the trail) and when I went from drive to reverse the linkage fell apart because of the load on the transmission. So i was stuck in drive with my front bumper pressed up against a tree. We had to dig underneath the truck in mud and slush to put it back together.

    Actually grease has a tendency to displace water. One of the reasons to use brake caliper grease in lieu of antiseize.

    Never had the problem, and our winters are pretty moist. The various springs in the mechanism put a lot of return force on shoes. Once the parking brake is released at the handle, even if the shoes are frozen to the drum, a little bit of power will break up the ice. If you never use your parking brake and there's a lot of corrosion built up inside the drum, that may contribute to the problem.

    Yeah.
    This was kind of my point. If you are using it regularly, it shouldn't be a problem, and if there is, I can't see how that would leave you stranded. If just driving out of it doesn't bust it loose, some whacks with a tire iron should get it going. If that doesn't work, there's probably a LOT more wrong with the vehicle that makes it unsafe to be driving.

    Who is teaching people about cars these days? The parking brake is your FIRST defense, having it in gear is a safeguard. Not the other way around. Now I'm off to set my points gap and dwell . . .

    Depends on whether you're pointing uphill or downhill... In addition to ALWAYS using the parking brake (so you don't rely on the parking pawl to hold the full weight of the vehicle) I always shift from drive to park when facing uphill, and from drive into reverse, pause, then park, if facing downhill. Then set the parking brake. Your truck should not roll back or forward, putting the weight of the truck on the parking pawl. This is bad for the transmission. I wish I could teach my wife the same thing...

    Edit: the parking brake is easy to adjust on the Tacoma
    Edit 2: the frozen north changes the parking brake strategy for sure

    Always use the Parking Brake.
    Always place manual transmission in Reverse.
    Always turn the wheels into the curb.

    Not even sure Drivers Ed is a requirement anymore. Maybe not even an elective.

    And I seriously doubt this procedure is part of the actual field or paper test to receive your license. Too many automatic transmissions.

    Although, as @JoefromPTC mentions above in #68, the proper process is similar for an auto. Let the brake hold the load of the vehicle, use Park as the safety mechanism.

    i've replaced the shoes in the rear, its a 2006 the cylinders in the wheels for drum brakes are old. my guess is the springs are also old and thats whats giving no resistance to me pulling the brake as far out as it goes.
    i've noticed since i've gotten the truck the ebrake is less effective then it was.

    trust me if i had the money right now i'd be fixing a lot of stuff but as i'm sure you're aware not everyone is rich!

    don't give me that fucking face palm. :censored:

    i know drivers ed teaches with automatics. so no, nothing about manual transmissions in the drivers test or written portion hell nothing even in the class room.

    Getting a drivers license requires zero competency. Vehicle manufacturers have been trying to keep up with the viral spread of stupidity and ignorance with things like ABS, one button 4x4, idiot buzzers everywhere, no spare tire (why bother), and computerized everything. Remember when cars came with a small tool kit?? I still have an old adjustable wrench that has "Toyota" on the handle. I keep it just to remind me. Sadly, the manufacturers are losing the fight.

    It always makes me laugh when I hear that a driver "lost control" and (fill in your favorite crash story). The truth is, most drivers lost control when they started the engine.

    The ideal situation would be to require a real test, and prove real competency in all aspects of driving to get a "driver's license". If you fail, you get an autonomous vehicle permit. End of story.

    At least when I started driving the idiots were spaced out a little more. Now there is always one a car length away.

    If your wheel cylinders were failing you'd be leaking brake fluid and have no pressure. Weak springs aren't your issue either.

    If you pull the cup holder out of the center console you will see the adjuster nuts for the parking brake right there. No $$ required.

    As I mentioned, the parking brake also keeps your rear shoes in adjustment. So use it.
