May I suggest a 4runner? Get a trailer or hitch rack to haul icky stuff if you need it.

You may - but I test drove both. What I recall was the 4runner seemed older and less refined (dated interior, loud roar-y engine) than the brand new 3rd gen Tacoma which was Cadillac by comparison. The Tacoma was also about $5k less expensive for what I thought was the more refined vehicle.

Maybe lift it? And bigger tires.

Seems to work for people. That and/Or regear

I tried this and added three sandbags in the back, unfortunately it didn't help. I do however have an appointment for next Wed. to get the rear diff. swapped. So here's to hoping that'll fix it.

Good luck and keep us updated after they swap out the rear.

Guys - I noticed today after some Christmas shopping (I actually kinda get some joy of tooling around to different stores) that the tone continues for about half a second after I let off the gas pedal. Any thoughts or corroboration there?

    Yep. I get that too.

Wait until you’re coasting down a hill under load and you hear it too.

I took my truck to the dealer on Tuesday for the howling rear end, Clunk when coming to a stop, and hood flutter. I was told my truck was ready to pick up today(Fri 22nd). I got to the dealer(1hr20min drive from big bear) waited around for an hour while they searched for my truck.
Turns out they sent it to caliber collision to have the hood webbing re bonded, but they never started the repair or sent my truck back to crown toyota in Ontario ca. So my service advisor that told me my truck was ready, apologized & said how it wasn't his fault for 20 mins. He gave me a $50 toyota gift card, he's going to have caliber collision detail my truck, & got me a 2018 tacoma sport 4x4 sb with 200 miles on it as a loaner.
The loaner makes the howling noise but it is not close to as loud as my 16 dclbor 4x4. The bsm is annoying while driving in big bear single lane roads make it beep non stop & the auto high beams are worthless, they go off for no reason.
On my work order receipt, they just threw on the front page able to hear hum from the rear differential. Compared to other tacomas and diff sound is the same. For the Clunk when coming to a stop it says Verified slight Clunk when coming to a stop. This is the transmission down shifting. Compared concern with several other tacomas. Operation is normal at this time. I know for a fact it's not the transmission down shifting. I may have been born at night but not last night.

I agree, I test drove a coworkers 2018 off road and it also has a howling sound similar to mine. It's really not any quieter.

I guess that answers my question if the problem has been addessed on the 2018s.

I am willing to guess they added more sound proofing to the cabin to decrease noise. Only time will tell though as this particular model only had 400 miles on it

I just purchased a 2018 DCLB SR5 last night. I did not notice a howl during my 20 mile test drive. I was stoked! However, I did notice the howl about a half mile into my drive home... Kind of bummed, but it sounds like there is no fix for the noise still. I'll just have to learn to avoid 55-60mph haha

IIRC, the sport has a different rear diff and not prone to the howling noise...

It doesn’t. Give it time though, mine took more than a 1000 miles. It’s pretty well documented that all diffs are susceptible to this.

I just don't understand why this isn't being resolved by Toyota. I guess as long as they are still selling they really don't care. They are dragging their name through the mud for profits sake. How many Platinum VSCs will they issue before they say "hey we should probably fix this, we are spending more covering up the issue rather then addressing it".

I rode in my neighbors 2018 2WD Sport Tacoma today and it has the rear end howl after only 900 miles on the odometer.

    Bummer.

Sounds like it’s a systematic problem that’s not going away...
