"you will need" is a strong statement. I'm at 65k on stock needle bearings and lift, YMMV.
From the perspective of the dealership I work at, I've got a lot more customers with lift and stock needle bearings than have needed
replacement.

Yeah, it's a case by case thing. I only have 6k miles on my 17 (purchased end of 16) and no issues with my needle bearing, but I see people here getting it immediately after lifting as well.

YMMV.

 

Yeah some are lucky and some aren't. This is just a cheap precautionary step to take when lifting your Tacoma and to prevent any front end vibrations from a broken needle bearing.


That being said, your Taco looks sweeet. How did you go about getting the graphics on the sides?

Out with the old, and in with the new:



2018 TRD OR 4X4 DCSB. Right at $40k including $1k of dealer 'nifties' before negotiating. I calculated about 10.2% off of MSRP. $8k for my single owner 2007 4x4 AT with 190k miles (in Texas that works out to about $8.5k street sale based on the tax rate). Added the winch tray (no winch) and Gobi roof rack and ladder many moons ago. This FJ was as reliable as an old mule. It just went wherever you pointed it. Took its time, but it got there. Sucked gas doing it. Made noise doing it. Caught bugs doing it. But you never worried about not getting there. I've had over a thousand pounds of lumber up top. Had over a thousand pounds of stone in the back. I think I can squeeze 18 bags of mulch in the back too. Plus another dozen up top easy. It was rear-ended about 9 months ago and they spent $13k fixing it. I was certain they were going to total it.

Before I get blasted for swapping from an FJ to a Tacoma, there were reasons. I needed something a little more pleasant to drive the wife and I around in. I have a really nice CUV for that right now, but eventually I'm trading that for a 2-door weekend car and wanted to be able to jump on the right deal when it came along. So the Tacoma is my compromise. It's nice enough I'll use it as a daily driver and for nights on the town. But then we can take the 'whatever I get' for fun times when we want. I needed a utility vehicle, so trading the FJ for a 2 door just wasn't going to cut it.

Lots of info here on the forum. It's about 10 times the activity of my other forum. I'll add the blackout package aftermarket, add some sliders with steps. Considering the OVTune, but will drive it for a few thousand first. Considering racks, but will have to see what my needs are in the future.

I know the new grill isn't for everyone, but I do like how they darkened it. That darker look looks much better on the Inferno than the older TRD grill did.

Now have fun resisting all of the awesomeness that is contained within these forums...your wallet will suffer

 

Pretty happy with the rig so far. I'll admit that the drivetrain feels a little more car'ish than truck'ish. I figure I'll add bits and pieces here and there, but keep the mechanics basically stock. A bit of regret on getting rid of the FJ (sort of like I backstabbed it... loved that thing). But, I just wasn't feeling the extra $150 in payments to keep it, ($225 when you include insurance). Plus, justifying 3 cars to my wife's 1 was going to be hard.

A few annoying things I've noticed in my 50 miles or so.

• Since the system is 'smart', you can't leave your headlights on. Otherwise the Entune system dims too far and during the day you can't see it very well at all.
• Keyless entry is only active on the driver's door. I always open/close the door for my wife so I'm always digging for my key. Might as well have had a key and saved the money.
• Miles and miles of front hood. This is probably due to the seating position.
• Rearview mirror could be higher. I find that today's mirrors take up so much windshield space and for me block quite a bit of the view. I'm 6'4".
• We played with crawl mode in the parking lot. It made lots of noise, is that norm?
• Oh.... now I have to clean out the third bay in the garage. FJ was an old dog so lived outside and didn't complain. Tacoma needs it's own garage space.
• One blank space in the left side button panel... what should I put there?

 

You can change which doors unlock with the keyless option...you can choose drivers' door only or all 4 doors. I believe it's in the "settings" menu on the Home screen.

 

Actually, I was way off. On your main menu, go to: "Apps" then "Setup" then "Vehicle" (must be running) then "Vehicle Customization" then "Door Lock Settings"

That should take one thing off the shit list!

The issue is that when we approach the car from her side, I have to activate the key fob to get the doors to open since there is no sensor on the passenger door. My wife's prior Audi had all 4 doors with sensors. She got a new Bimmer and only the front two have sensors, but that's better than only the driver's door.

I'll have to check and see how we're set though for when I handsfree my door. I think we're set for all four, but can't swear to it.

 

The rearview mirror position is not fixed.

As for the button blank, add an ejecto seat switch for yourself the next time you use crawl control on pavement.

Yes, I've adjusted the rearview about as high up as it goes. I'll admit it goes higher than most and I didn't have it all the way adjusted, so got another inch out of it when cruising Christmas lights tonight.

As for crawl control... it was a dealer demo in their parking lot. But the question still stands, was the noise a function of great concrete traction or can I expect it during normal offroad use as well?

I have thought about putting some nonsense switch in there; i.e. laser cannon, or rear spikes, or 100 GigaWatts.

 

That's true...no sensor on the passenger door. Toyota's keyless entry wasn't designed for a true gentleman!

 

Yea I dislike not having a sensor on the passenger side too. Oddly, my 2015 4Runner has it...

 

Just the opposite! lol To open the doors, you just have to be a gentleman and get to (your) door first so that it unlocks the ladies door before she gets to it.

 

you don't have auto headlights?

 

Crawl control is a weird animal. Doing a demo in the dealership parking lot does not do it justice, it just feels weird, and doesn't really do anything. Once you get it out on the trail its pretty cool. I've used it a couple of times, and it is a little loud. I'm not sure if that's all the Crawl control system, or if its just the creaking of the suspension as we were going over obstacles, but it it is a nice feature.

It's ok to (suggest) but to say "you need" is usually a misstatement that costs others both time and money.
There are people on this forum that are looking for answers and since they may not be well versed in things like this, they take the "you need" as gospel.
IMO would be a better way to go.
Maybe between your work at a dealership and your own business you should consider a blog .
