Put 255/85/16s on stock OR wheels and suspension

Had the 255/85 16 ST Maxx mounted today. I was thinking of them as temporary until I could do a lift and some 285/75’s, but they actually look to be the perfect size to me. Definitely ride a bit more stiff than the stock tires. What pressure are you guys running with these? Tire shop set them all to 42 psi.

 

That's probably the best number for MPGs, if you want it more comfortable try 28 psi. Your MPGs might take a small hit but for some the comfort is worth the expense! All up to what you wanna get out of it. Btw, with 255/85s on stock 7.5" rims you should be able to air DOWN without worrying about popping beads off. I've heard of people running below 10 while wheeling without popping beads

 

MPG is running a distant third to looks cool and comfy. I’ll give 28 a try. Thanks for the info.

 

If you run too low you can also fuck up your tires with uneven wear. Best bet is to get some chalk and do the chalk test to get the most life out of your tires.

Got them on some snow today. Icy / packed snow on the highway and packed plowed road to the cabin. ST Maxx are pretty sticky. Supposed to get 8” over the next couple of days. Can’t wait to see how they do.

I may do this size with the Mastercraft Courser CXT which is the twin of the Cooper ST Maxx. Found a set for $840 shipped. Im running 2" of lift with BORA .75" wheel spacers, wonder if the spacers would cause rubbing at flex while on the trails.

 

Love seeing the ST Maxx feedback in here. If Cooper hasn't made the STT Pro's in 255 by the time my KM2's are dead, I'll probably go that route.

The only bad thing I will with mine is fuel mileage. I am getting 16 average right now with winter blend. My first two tanks were 18 and 18.4. Something to keep in mind if that concerns you.

 

Meh if I want to care about mpg's I'll ride the Duc.

What did you have to do to get 35s to fit on a third gen?

Hey @dannynoonan do you have any rubbing? This is the size I will be going for, I don't mind trimming the fender flare but not into bashing welds or sawing the cab mount. I'm stock right now but 6112/5160 set for 1.5" lift to level is going to be going on very soon. Thanks bud, truck looks fantastic BTW

Not Danny but I dunno if we can speak to fitment on 2nd gens. This thread is all about 3G stockers.

That said, I wheel with a guy who runs the same tires I do on a 2g. @tacabode - did you have to do anything to get your 255s to fit?

 

I ran this size on a bone Stock 2nd gen on some tundra wheels, which are very similar specs to the Tacoma wheels. No rubbing once I unbolted the front of the fender liner, pushed it back and ziptied it out of the way.
