Converting 2006 Toyota Tacoma from 2wd to 4wd

Hey guys glad I could join the group. Imma hit y’all with a serious question that I’ve been researching. How much and what all do I need to convert my 2006 Toyota Tacoma prerunner to 4wd? Trading or selling My truck is a negative.. I love my truck.

 

I’d estimate 2-3k if you do the labor

Front diff
T case
Cv axles
Wheel bearings
Front/rear drive shafts
New transmission
Fabricate a new 4x4 crossmember
Hardware to mount the diff
Wiring to activate ADD System
Interior 4wd switch

 

Would that be searching around to find the parts cheap as possible or new? An doing it myself or paying someone more mechanically inclined? Cause I haven’t did a swap like this yet

 

I did manual trans at the same time. It was about 5.5k. There is custom work that needs to be done. If your up for that. A modified driveline as well. If you decide to do it I have a few left over parts that may help you.

 

Not new...new would be like 10k

Buy new hub bearings though from here

Yes I did. I don't recommend that for the faint of heart.

 

I found some of the big parts off eBay. I found a new trans not rebuilt from Toyota for about $1800 plus shipping. That was after I finished. Lol

 

Why not sell the 2wd and buy a 4x4?

 

So if I kept it auto it would run about 2-3k? Swapping to manual would probably be 5-6k?? How long would it take to do either one once I got everything I need?

 

Mine took a while I even had problems with bad parts so more down time. Be patient it will take time. Especially when is the fabrication of the crossmember. Then once everything's in you can take a measurement for your drive line to have the drive line modified. Which the carrier bearing will be modified to a new location as well as a front section shortened and have a new flange put on.

 

I set aside about a week if all goes good. So have other transportation.

 

Honestly I just paid it off and I’ve put some work into it. Most importantly I’m down for the project.

 

2-3k is just a guess...all depends on how much the parts are that you find.


In my opinion it’s not worth the trouble...sell it

 

Are you down for custom fabrication and welding?
Just be prepared.
Do a search for rock solid toys. Wyatt has done a few conversions and will help awnser some questions.

 

It is a big a$$ job. Money, money, money. I only did my conversion because I could not find I used 4x4 under $33k. But that is how California goes. Overcharge for everything. Lol

 

It's madness. Sell it. Buy the identical truck with a 4x4 switch.

 

Depending on parts, you can do the conversion for under 3k. Look into 4th gen 4Runner Parts, that’s what I used, the hardest part will be swapping the tranny and building a new/custom tranny cross member.

Do you want an auto tranny? Electronic or manual tcase?
