You’re crazy to build a 7.3 for power anymore sadly. The common rail stuff just blows it away. The HEUI injectors, turbo pedestal options and a 4r100 build make building a fire breather truck cost a fortune.

That being said, I love mine....it just runs and runs. I refuse to buy an 08+ emissions truck and I’m not coughing up $25k for an LBZ either. I seriously contemplated a 24v but 4x4 was a must and Dodge’s solid axle suspension is a total disaster on them

Come to Rudy's Diesel here in NC when they have one of their shop Dyno days. There usually is the guys who I got my headers from there and they are pushing 1100 hp on the 7.3l. Is it impossible to do no does it cost yeah. The first gen duramaxes had issues with the allison because they put the cheapest one in the truck that wasn't even rated for what the dmax put out. All the trucks once you start really pushing the power up there get expensive mostly in the transmission. The 7.3 is at a disadvantage because it isn't a common rail. Also it was fun building the 7.3 because no one else does it people like you called me crazy or it can't be done etc. Well I did it. That 8k lb truck would run low 9s in the 1/8th spinning the wheels most of the way down the track. The 4r100 actually costs less than building an Allison and about the same as building the dodge trans (they are weak too). Now I didn't spend any money on labor or having a shop do it I did all the work myself so that saved a ton, well except the trans I had a 4r100 specialty shop build that to my specs. So really I was in it cost of parts.

The 6.0l you can push and make power easier than the 7.3l

I completely agree with the whole 08+ thing screw that. I am not a fan of any of the Dmax's so I don't care if it were 5g I wouldn't buy it.

Often people have asked me what my ultimate diesel hauler would be my response has always been a Dodge frame, Ford body, interior and suspension, Allison trans, and a 24v cummins. All those choices are made from what I have seen over the years.

But the 6.0 is a flaming pile of shit.

I'm sorry you're not a fan of the Dmax. They are great trucks...They drive great, are dead nuts reliable, the trans is phenomenal for less than 100hp over stock...Theres a reason they have a $10k premium in the market.

I'm also not a big HP 3/4 ton truck guy either though, I view them as work trucks that should be mostly left along for longevity and reliability. If I want to go fast then I'm building a car that doesn't have to haul around 8k lbs.

Yeah the 6.0 wasn't a great motor. As far as diesels go I would not say the Dmaxes are dead nuts reliable. Maybe the latest iterations are better but before I left turning wrenches for a living it was a toss up between them and the 6.0l of who was in the shop more. It was like they learned nothing from the 6.5 and 6.2. Major fuel issues, first gens the allisons constantly blew on (newer ones are better and built for the power), first gens heads lifting and warping, the IFS front suspension and 4wd is junk especially behind the diesels, Turbos grenading to be fair the ford 6.4 did the same crap. Also to be fair the 6.0 had constant EGR issues as well as fuel issues, the trans was better than the 4r100 but not a whole lot. Also the Dodge's grenade transmissions (but they could never get an auto right unless it's an old 727 or the like.) Ford's also had constant waterpump and cooling fan clutch issues. Hell the 4r100 is essentially the mustang trans on steroids so it really wasn't up to the task of handling the torque. They all have their issues.

The one nice thing ford did though is we could remove the cab in about an hr and be able to work on everything so much easier where Dodge and Chevy we fought everything.

There are very few vehicles I will call dead nuts reliable because I saw all the failure modes and got to see the majority of what happened. What I mentioned is also not just I saw one truck with this issue it was I saw many and fairly common failures.

I put close to 100k miles on my turned up 7.3l of not nice use either. You can do quite a bit to the trucks in turning up the wick and still have longevity and reliability.

On your point of the 08+ thing the whole DPFE is causing issues with all manufacturers on the exhaust side burning turbos up and other issues no matter the engine or manufacturer including the smaller euro diesels.

No way was the 6.0 ever even close to the early Dmaxes in reliability. LB7's puke injectors every 100k and are a pain in the ass to replace but turbo issues on any gen are virtually non-existent. Some LLY guys have had issues with HG's but they are typically tuned and pushing way more boost than stock. Then the 6.0...head gaskets, VGT actuators, EGR coolers, sticky injectors, FICM, IPR, ICP, oil cooler, high pressure oil pump....the list just goes on and on. Plus there is just no fix for some of the 6.0 parts...FICM failure is just inevitable no matter what. 6.4's...don't even get me started either...Biggest throw away piece of crap that's just about ever existed.

What's wrong with the IFS and 4WD on Chevy 3/4 tons? Yeah the tie rods aren't going to put up with 500hp boosted 4wd launches but for 99% of consumers, it rides and tracks down the road great. Same with the Allison, it's not going to put up with huge power numbers but stock-ish they work great. It is lightyears ahead of the 4r100 in daily driveablity...the 5r110 behind the 6.0 was a huge step forward in transmissions too.

08+ trucks typically don't have many hard parts failing but the DPF typically has to be replaced about every 150k. The real killer on them is all of the sensors in the exhaust. Pressure differential sensors, NOX, and DEF dosers all fail pretty regularly and can put you in limp mode. Most, if not all, manufactures use Faurecia for exhaust emissions components so everyone is affected about equally.

I've seen the DPFs break apart and that crap goes everywhere for whatever reason it goes upstream to the turbos. DOW chemical does all the internal crap and yes all of them are equal in that failure incl. VW/Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and the like. I wasn't saying that GMs mess up more than fords just that it has been the bane of the newer diesels since inception. My buddy who is a OTR tech is seeing major issues with CAT, Cummins, International, and volvo because of them. They are a loosing battle.

No the damn 6.4s were total junk. I had a many of them with turbo failure within 30k. I know all those issues with the 6.0 but the early Dmaxes had many issues as well and I saw them in the shop just as much as the 6.0. Now the current generation is very trouble free.

I have rebuilt many of the GM front diffs. Plus like our tacomas front hub bearings go bad, and axle seals constantly leaking, there is actually a whole redesign and retrofit for the older ones to the newer style seals.

Oh I'm not arguing with the 4r100 being a stupid idea it completely was the 5r100 was much better. The original allison put in the Chevys was the lightest duty one could buy they weren't set up to handle stock power kinda like the 4r100. When the 2nd gens came around they went with a trans that is arguably the best on the market and the newest ones are better yet.

FWIW ford has many more of the light duty trucks on the st than any other manuf. They hold the market in catering to the commercial market.

Dodges had their issues too transmmissions both manual and auto as well as crap tastic interior and body. Then like you said epic fail in front suspension design

I think we both have different views on these I am going based on what I saw in the shop and worked on. Like I said before my perfect 3/4 ton and bigger truck would be the cummins backed by the allison, on a dodge chassis with ford running gear and a ford body and interior but if you like the GM interior and body those are good as well. This essentially makes the most reliable and toughest truck on the market.

Nothing wrong with different views at all! No question that ford made a killing from the 99-15 SD body too. I’d hodgepodge them together in a similar fashion as well.

I love driving my Tacoma to work and around town but it sure is nice to kick back and relax on the drive with a trailer...even my fiancée doesn’t mind driving it down the highway while I sleep. Easily my favorite mod to the Tacoma!

Damn kids with no sense of adventure! Driving the truck home after wheeling is a large chunk of the fun.

Whomever built that truck for you needs a kick in the sack if it's that big of a handful on the highway. I'm an idiot and can barely use a tape measure and I can easily do 80 and drive with 2 fingers all day I'm my home built POS, once I replace that clock spring I'll have my cruise back!

    Trailer mod :D

I don't need to kick myself in the sack...It honestly runs fine on the highway, straight as an arrow all day. It's the running 3/4 throttle to run 75, grabbing third gear in the hills, having no room for camping gear, and generally needing ear plugs after hour number 4 that makes having a trailer and tow rig totally worth it to me. We were able to bomb straight through and back from Moab because you can sleep in back of the Ford, can't do that in the Tacoma full of gear.
