What Have You Done To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Same here, but I wasn't referring to you specifically. I grew up in Idaho, so, to me, Boise was "city" and it's a lot bigger now than it was when I was living near there. Now that I've lived in Fort Worth and have worked in Dallas, Boise is more like a "town".

My point was, for some, "city" driving means having to come to a full stop at a stop sign rather than just rollin' through it. For others, "city" driving is perpetual stop-and-go and sitting at long lights.

 

I have had the 3rd gen 4cyl... 3rd gen 2wd v6... And now the third gen 4wd v6...

The 4cyl and 2wd v6 surprisingly got about the same mpg... I averaged 21-23 with both.

The 4x4 gets a bit worse... I averaged 19-20mpg before switching tires... I'm only running 265/75/16s now but it dropped me down to 18mpg average per tank.

I live in a town with less than 1200 people... 1 red light... Mostly 55mph limits and 40 on the main street.

I dont have a lead foot but do occasionally get on it and go.

 

I ended up trading my 2017 magnetic gray Tacoma sport rear wheel drive for my brand new 2017 white Tacoma off-road yesterday. I loved my sport for the 2 months that I had it, but I think going with the off-road model is the way to go.

I planned on Storm Troopering my truck today but its rainy and cold so I'll just fool around with the various radio settings and get my new truck up to speed with all my music stations and preferences.

 

I've got a V6 4x4 OR, and i'm at ~3,300 ft. of altitude in Montana. Usually put 87 Octane as that's the lowest I can find, although I've read that 85 would also be OK too.

Around town, i'll get mid-teens, with high-teens/low 20's on any decent highway driving. The first...1,000 miles were brutal though, I was averaging like 11 to 15 mpg with mixed driving. I'm sure there's obviously a TON of factors that go into this, but I typically get worse mileage than most people do, regardless of vehicle, and I can acknowledge that me (and my heavy foot) are the common denominator here, lol.

 

Is the new one 4x4? Or just the off road version with different shocks?

My new Taco is 4x4. I was in between the 4x4 Sport or the 4x4 Off-road and decided to go with the off-road. It seemed like a better overall package for the price.

 

Well that depends on the user. If planning to do all street / highway with minimal off road. Then sport it is. If planning on doing quite a bit of off roading, then the OR is the ticket.

 

They should add the scoop to the offroad and make it an offroad sport version. Since so many have already added the scoop @CBoy808 should make a quarter panel OffRoad Sport decal. That will confuse the heck out of dealers at trade in time.

i think its because they're are snapping these pics on a full tank of gas, so its resetting to a high average when you coast out the parking lot. I can make mine say 40 mpg for 20 minutes after a fill up, but its eventually going down to the true 16mpg where it belongs.

I was originally going to buy a 2016 Sport. I test drove it, liked it. They had a TRD OR the sales guy asked me to drive per him, to see if there is a difference. My seat of the pants delta was the Sport was stiffer, bumpier ......the TRD OR would glide over bumps....no doubt suspension dampened out the bumps.
I ordered a TRD OR. Then once I got it upgraded to Bilstiens 5100’s 3rd Gen.....my truck rides smooth......er.
Plus I get the whole fancy 4x4 system.....for basically the same cost as a Sport. Not knocking the Sport.

 

Mine is a 4x4 SR5 V6 DC and I’m not happy if I’m less than 21mpg on a tank. I live in Kentucky so there are plenty of hills and I don’t spend much time on the interstate. However, I adjust my driving style to get max gas mileage.

 

I don't have any faith in my mpg readout. The tank avg showing might be 16.5 but that is with roughly 350 miles on the tank and not empty. Then I fill up and it says distance to e is 412 miles. Don't need to be a genius to figure 17.7 gallons on 348 miles is a lot more than 16.5 mpg (for those driving Colorados the math equals 19.6 actual mpg). And that does not consider the 3% larger tires. Never understood where the truck computer gets the numbers. Even when I dog the truck I calculate mpg at 18 mpg and when I fill it the thing says 385 miles to e which is more than 18 mpg. Japanese math ?

 

I posted this last month from a 430 miles trip I took to KY.

MPG reported by dashboard as 20.1 as apposed to same trip last month without Tonneau cover at 19.6. Some improvement.
MPG reported by dashboard as 20.1 but fuel receipts and calculator come out to 20.7.

 

On the topic of MPG.... When I first got my truck (used) I was never seeing above 18mpg.... usually 17 for around town. After I had T-SB-0077-16 Rev 1 applied, I now consistently see over 20. Not sure if it is the new shift patterns, or just resetting the learning from however the previous owner handled her, but I'm certainly not complaining.

I also am VERY happy about the ride now. Before the TSB, I was frustrated by all of the common complaints - hunting for gears on the freeway and on hills, over-agressive upshifting, and hard shift from R to D. Now she rides almost as smooth as my previous '07 did.

 

I also am very happy with mine 12 months post rev 1. The more miles I put on it the better it performs. Seems to have improved quite a bit between 12k and 16k miles overall.

 

I think the only reason the don't put a scoop on the off-road is that it would eliminate one of the major reasons anyone buys a sport.
