I took my truck into the dealership and they were gonna cover the leaf spring replacement. My truck didn’t need it because they have aftermarket leaf springs. I replaced the carrier bearing and they inspected the drive shaft and u joints and everything was good!

Just info regarding the lifted truck question. I set-up an appointment @ the dealership for this next week. I was planning on lifting and installing new wheels/tires yesterday, so I inquired about this when I spoke to the dealership. Keep in mind, I just purchased this truck from them in July, and they just saw it last week (they know it's not lifted yet). They said Toyota would NOT honor this service if the truck (suspension) was modded in any way. However, since it's a known issue (especially if you're buddy with your dealer), I'd still ask.

Replaced mine in August. Due to an injury, I paid an acquaintance at a local Indy shop to do it. Cleaning up my desk in Oct., I decided there was no reason to hold on to the receipt any more, this is a normal wear part right? I'd expect to replace the u-joints. Couple weeks later I get the recall, including instructions for reimbursement if you've already replaced them. A process that of course includes providing your receipt. :angrygirl: Oh well, it IS a normal wear part I'd have expected to replace. :notsure:

I just went to have mine looked at today. They were under the impression that I had driveline vibration, and when I told them I had not experienced vibration, they said they were not going to replace anything. They said they need to re-create it before they change anything. So, I came home and pumped it full of synthetic grease. I'm installing a lift this weekend, so we'll see if I have any vibes afterwards.

I wouldnt consider universal joints as a " normal wear item " like brakes or a clutch
If universal joints are lubricated on a regular schedule , they will outlast the life of the truck providing your drive line angles are within the 3 degree limit

That's bull even lubricated they are only tiny needle bearings they will wear out. I have owned and serviced many a trucks and they wear out they are under quite a bit of stress, heat, and friction.

According to the latest greatest article, they were installed without grease @ Toyota. So they basically ran from day one with no grease, until the 1st oil change where (hopefully) the u-joint was greased. My dealer wouldn't fess up to that today though.

    Not bull my friend .
While I agree with your thoughts on stress possibly due to improper drive line angles , lift kits , larger tires or lack of a proper lubrication schedule , they will last forever if regular service is followed .
Like you , I have replaced thousands of them . Lack of service is the usual cause of failure

    Here's info from this thread.

So does anybody know why this warranty enhancement came into effect ?
Has anyone seen videos of the devastation involved when a driveshaft snaps-off during highway speeds ?

This is a cautionary note directly from Spicer
Warning: Inadequate lubrication can cause driveline failure, which can result in separation of the driveline from the vehicle. A separated driveline can result in serious injury or death.

I will make this quick and clear as day .

Spicer is the driveshaft contractor for ourToyota trucks
Spicer sells the driveshafts to Toyota and they are installed on our trucks during assembly at the Toyota factory
The factory spicer universal joints are only lubricated with an assembly lubricant when Spicer sold the driveshafts to Toyota

It is the responsibility of Toyota to lubricate the driveshaft after the driveshaft has been installed in the new vehicle .
The Spicer assembly lubricant is what it is " strictly " an assembly lubricant .
    http://spicerparts.com/resources/lube-torque-specs

When you picked up your brand new 2005 - 2011 Toyota Tacoma from the dealership , the grease zerks were supposed to be greased during the Pre delivery inspection that you paid to have performed and then re-greased at every oil change thereafter .
If for any reason , the technician skipped out on the universal joint lubrication during the Pre delivery inspection to save time , you drove off the dealership parking lot with basically " no " lubrication in your universal joints .

For the trucks sold with polypropleyne sealeduniversal joints ( No grease zerks ) ...you guysshould be OK
For any owner of a 4X4 with 5 grease zerks on the driveshafts , I highly suggest you take advantage of this program .
The greaseable universal joints should be greased at every oil change and most importantly before the vehicle is sold to you .

If it makes you feel any better , Third generation Toyota trucks sold in 2016 didnt get any grease in the universal joints when the trucks were sold to new owners as well .
Unfortunately , Tacoma World only gets theword out to a few new owners in comparison to how many new trucks are sold.
With this said , I beleive the program will be extended through to 2017 trucks
If you want proof , read here

I am not going to argue with you about fatiguing parts and stress loads etc. If that's what you think this is one of the biggest reasons I left the automotive industry because people kept telling other shit should last forever. My question is then why do tie rods, ball joints etc. that are serviceable and have been serviced their entire lives still wear! Engines constantly wear. By your logic all mechanical objects if serviced correctly and regularly will last forever.

Haha I had one come apart and the driveshaft luckily stayed in the trans going down the highway. On our trucks with the 2 piece shaft it'll stay under the truck may bounce around some and maybe bang into some things and pull wires etc.

So I brought my taco to the dealer yesterday. I have a vibration clear as day. When I called to set up the appointment I asked if they would be able to do the repair since I am 45 min away.

Can you believe it, they didn't have the ujount in stock and had to schedule the service for next week. Waste of time, I should have just done it myself. Cheap part!

I am not arguing either lol . I think Spicer has pretty much spelled it out for you in their " Warning "
Believe what you want to believe . I cant explain every failure you have witnessed
In your defence , it may be why Toyota went with sealed universal joints on all 4x4,s in 2018 .
No more grease zerks on the driveline and less work for the technician during a pre -delivery inspection . 5 less grease zerks for every new Toyota 4x4 coming off the assembly line
Polypropylene sealed joints are designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle .
Thats 50,000 trouble free miles according to what manufacturers say should be the life of a new vehicle .
My logic and personal preference is any universal joint that has a grease zerk and is serviced on a regular basis . I know for a fact I can get more than 50k out of a joint that is serviceable and my customers will back up what I preach
We are talking about universal joints within this post , not ball joints , tie rods or engines .
Universal joints are probably the most neglected item on a vehicle

I do not disagree one bit that greaseable U-joints are some of the most neglected and I do agree that they should last longer than 50k miles. I also agree that they should be serviced and greased when the vehicle is in for an oil change. I do not believe nor have I seen them last the lifetime of vehicles. I was comparing the serviceable U-joints to those other items because my point is that any mechanical object will eventually fail and not last forever or possibly for the lifetime or longer of the vehicle. GM, Ford, and Chrysler went to non serviceable u-joints a long time ago and I have had to replace them much more often than that of the serviceable type. My point is and will always be that mechanical objects will fail or wear out eventually due to the 3 reasons I expressed earlier. Manufacturers do not say that new vehicles should only last 50k miles where do you get that? IF that were the case then why are pretty much every manufacturer coming with well over that in powertrain warranty. Maybe a 1960s vehicle yeah but not today's vehicles.

Hahaha good luck with that. They're gonna tell you to kick rocks.
Unless you include a letter from a licensed shop that diagnosed the problem and found the same root that Toyota based this extended warranty on
