Me in the kitchen of the same house, also in 1991...

    22067_1317764261424_7315617_n_207d764713cc43288fcb08ccd4925d71789c1737.jpg

Even by 1990 standards, that kitchen was HIDEOUS. However, the house was already finished by the time my parents decided to buy it. The original would-be purchasers suddenly backed out after the builder (David Cutler Group; Local builder in my area; Still in business!) had pocketed about $20,000 of their money. As such, they sold this brand new house to my parents for $20K below original value!

Christmas 1992 (Same house; I think it was 1992). That third stocking from right above the fireplace (With Santa's face on it) is mine...

I still have that stocking and use it every year!

Back then I loved playing with Duplo blocks...

I live in MD and it's been a while since I renewed my license, but I didn't know they did this. I've got Asperger's too, btw.

Is your license expired? And more importantly, have you ever had any problems dealing with police in the past?

License is not expired, and I haven't had any issues with the police. Although I have made cops "bristle" with my responses to questions. I am 6' 2"/225lb and I had a short cop give me a look up and down and I could tell he was wondering if he could take me. It was in a situation involving my ASD child, and if you were a parent, you may understand how protective a parent can be.

I'm not a parent (yet), but I understand how protective they can be. So you have Asperger's and your kid is ASD? What was the situation if you don't mind me asking?

This was definitely not 1993 because that was the year my Grandma bought me a 10-gallon fish tank for Christmas and my parents surprised me by setting it up in the corner where the recliner is in this picture...

In 1992 and 1994, we spent Christmas in Connecticut, at the home of the same grandma who bought me the fish tank. That would make this 1991, since it appears to be Christmas morning...

If you look closely, you'll notice that ornaments on the tree are in the same place in both pictures. The first picture of me in regular clothes with no presents under the tree was obviously prior to Christmas, while the second picture was obviously on Christmas morning...

He's been having issues at school, they are not trained in ASD and they put him in a special program mainly for the kids with behavior issues. The way they deal with the kids with behavior issues, is with restraint and isolation, neither of which works for someone on the spectrum. So after basically making my kid have a panic attack, they told us that they wanted to take him to the hospital once again, for a psych eval. Now we have had this happen several times at this point and I argued with the cop that we have done this already a few times, and that the doctors at the hospital will tell us once again, that with restraint and isolation, my child is behaving exactly as one would, being on the spectrum. I also was particularly annoyed that the cop lied when I complained that I would have to pay money for a co-pay if they took him to the hospital, and the cop said, "they don't charge for this." My wallet disagrees.

Anywho, still trying to work things out with the school. Currently he is doing home/hospital tutoring, but in January they want him to go back to school and they want to reintroduce him to that program. Fortunately, the regulations have changed and I, as a parent need to sign off that I allow them to do restraint and isolation. We've turned in the forms denying that request, so we will see what happens.

As for me, I'm older Charlie. When I was a kid, there was no ASD diagnosis, so I just recently found out that I have Aspergers. I've also found that my penchant to figure out how things work and to focus, have given me the ability to figure things out when others would simply give up. I'm a Network Engineer for a Govt contractor. I solve puzzles for a living. Nice to meet you, Charlie!

I have a friend who found out she had Asperger's at the age of 47! She's 50 now!

I had a bit of depression, OCD, and anxiety issues when I was 16-18 years of age, but no serious psychiatric issues. I never had to be admitted to the hospital for mental issues, though I will admit I've been on Zoloft (antidepressant) since the end of 2005, and Concerta (helps me focus) for at least that long.

However, I know exactly where you are coming from with the whole "isolation and restraint" thing. My issue was that they (meaning school staff, even the ones who were supposedly trained to deal with ASD students) always seemed to treat me one of two ways...

    1. Like a juvenile delinquent...
    2. Like a low-functioning retard...

Pardon my political incorrectness with that second one, but it's the truth. They treated me like a diagnosis and not a person!

We believe the "lead" teacher in the program doesn't believe in ASD, given the eyerolling we've been getting in the IEP meetings. I'm pretty sure if we don't agree to the "restraint and isolation" stuff, they won't take him back in that program, since that is pretty much their only mode of operation. I'm hoping they can just put him in Special Ed, with a full time aide that is trained. That would be ideal.
