Hey y'all so I have my Tacoma in the shop and was lucky enough to have an awesome rep at the rental location who hooked me up with a 2018 F150 with the redesigned 2.7 ecoboost with the 10 speed transmission.

Feel free to ask me any questions but here is my quick review:

    Engine

Oh my God I wish we had something like this in our trucks. Insanely fast and efficient, although I don't like the start stop you can disable it easily. Currently averaging 18 mpg. It has 400ft lb of torque that hits at 2750 rpm.

    Transmission

No issues, it is programmed well and sport mode makes it feel like some of the similar BMW twin power vehicles I have driven.

    Driving and ride

Very quiet, my wife loves it with additional space. I wish the infotainment was better but I'm sure it is with the sync 3 as an option. I am driving an xlt model in it's lowest trim.

The seats are much better than my Tacoma I need to take my truck into the dealer as my seat is almost worn out at 40k.

So far I like the truck, I love my Tacoma and can't wait to have it back from the body shop. This thread may start some strong opinions but I want to act as a resource for anyone looking at these two vehicles.

I drove one a couple years ago with that motor, felt "peppy" and light. I drove a Tundra after and it felt heavier and more solid. They are the best selling trucks for a reason I guess.

You should drive one with the 3.5 ecoboost, very powerful and around 25 mpg

Yeah but if he's getting 18 mpg with the 2.7, he would get around 16 mpg in the 3.5 given same driving style.

I honestly think Toyota could care less about a high performance version of the Taco....Unfortunately.
They want to sell volume. The PRO was their best answer, and it was a laughable performance difference over stock. I'll hold my breath for a forced fed Taco from the factory.

The pro is a joke, it's basically a trim upgrade.
I love the way the 3rd gen tacos look but the relentless transmission shifting are a sure sign that it and the under powered 3.5 will never see 300k.

I have heard many people say that the ecoboost has blown turbos before 100k.

Ford is a serious leader in inovation for the truck market, look at the strides they've taken with tech while the Tundra is still in 2007.

If they get serious with the new Ranger the mid-size market may have a new king.

If I was in the market for a full-size truck the F150 would be my choice. I'd get the V8 though, as they may not be around in a few years given the way things seem to be going.

I had a new F150 back in 2012. BEAST of a truck. They are definitely leaders in their segment for a reason. It was a tough decision choosing between a new taco or new F150 (with all their advancements). It came down to me just not needing a full size and wanting to experience owning a Taco for a long time.

My dad has a 2017 ecoboost 3.5 4x4. It's beautiful but just too large for my needs. But all aluminum body, a motor with actual power, and a nice interior are all hard to knock.

I was looking into them when i needed a full-size.

But @Iamraiderpower let me know that the third gen complaint forum here is nothing compared to an f150 forum with endless serious build quality issues.

I ended up with an 18 Tundra... Another bland, outdated, basic, comparatively bad mpg Toyota product. At least it does have decent power compared to the underpowered Tacoma. But the resale is good so it worked out best for my business needs.

For real. You sneak on over to f150forum.com and you will see nothing but page after page of the 15+ F150 being a complete giant pile of simmering rhinodonkey shit

Keep in mind when counting complaints that you must compare that to number of vehicles sold. If there are 10,000 complaints on F150forum, that’s still less than half of 1% of 2015+ trucks sold (2,000,000+).

Get over yourselves guys, every manufacturer makes good stuff these days. The Tacoma is pretty much bottom of the heap in every objective category. Subjectively however, the Tacoma has a factor that makes it enjoyable. Just be okay with that and stop worrying about everyone else’s truck.

You are correct, all automakers do have problems. It is now heavily noted and is becoming concerning for ford that their quality has dropped significantly with the 15+ truck. I can shit talk the F150 all I want, because I spent 3 months without mine because it was in the shop and the truck was less than a year old. The truck was basically rebuilt driveline wise from front to back. A complete fucking nightmare.
