I never owed a pick up...but I have questions. I;m still saving more money to buy one.
I notice the tacoma has rear drum brakes... my nissan altima 2000 has rear drum brakes... why is the tacoma still has rear drum brakes?
Is it better for the pick up truck? or too cheap to go disc? Frontier has rear disc and so does the tundra does too. Pain in a$$ to change the drum.

Why do you guys think? Do you guys think the 2008 will go rear disc?
I looked at the previous model of tacoma, and it had rear drum too.

s-10's were around for about 22 years or so and never went to rear disc. no telling. i had a 2000 s-10 and had to change the front pads a few times, but hardly saw any wear on the shoes...

EDIT: i stand corrected below by tacoma915. the s-10's did get discs in the rear when they came out w/ the 4 door...if u wanna call it that...haha

You won't really have to worry about rear brakes wearing much.
It is one of the things I really hate about the truck though. I thought about not buying one because of it. It just struck me as cheap that toyota wouldn't put rear discs on it.
Most of the braking pressure on a vehicle is exerted on the front brakes anyways. It doesn't make THAT much difference, but it just seems wrong haha.
That being said I have noticed our front brakes are 2 piston calipers. I wasn't expecting that after seeing the rear drums. I do have a 4x4 though I don't know if the 2wd models have 2 piston calipers or not. I know they have a smaller disc.

I think they were just being cheap. The added benefit is probably very minimal but it looks so much better. I have the 20's and can't stand the rear drum. Still would not make be buy a frontier though. Here is one possible solution.

Don't hold your breath waiting for Toyota to go to 4 wheel disc in 08'. I was hoping for that change after the redesign in 05'...and it hasn't happened...and probably won't until the next redesign.

Disc brakes on motor vehicle manufacturers have been proven to be the safest method; however, today's designs have taken many years to perfect. The transition from drum brakes to disc brakes has taken a long time. Many manufacturers would mount front discs and drum rears. Why? Cost... first and for-most and also due to rear disc brakes being vulnerable from debris off the front wheels. Hugh advances in designs to protect the rear disc brakes of vehicles have been implemented on most vehicles over the past 10 years. Wheel designs on 4wd and off-road vehicles have been changed to have large off sets to cover and protect the disc brakes. However, what usually prevails 'ultimately' is cost....rear drums are still cheaper than disc.

so the drum will do fine on stopping the truck? but just a cheaper way to do it. I like to work my vehicle myself sometimes. I dont know how to do well on drum with the brakes expanding to the rotors.

4 real this is a huge step back, No matter what the experts say 4 disc are bet for stoppage that drum brake. I have been search for a convertion kit for soooo long i think that some off the market brakes company should invest in this thought

    None yet! It's new!
There is precisely no reason to have disks on the back of our trucks other than the fact that you might think they're better (for this application) or they look better. Or it sounds better when you say, "I've got disks on the back of my truck." Most of the braking action comes from your front brakes. The drums, old as they are, are completely adequate.

I sold my first gen ('96) with about 150,000 miles on it. It had the original drum brakes on the back. That tells you something about the load put on them. Granted, the new LSD, etc. may put more load on them now, but that's only going to be maybe one mile out of a hundred, so to speak.

So. There. I said it. Now I'm stickin' to it.

I do not agree with that at all. The folks who HAVE converted the rears on this have not been happy with the results.

Well i disagree with both u guys, yes a truck may do most of it's braking in the front but the rear disc would help with a more stablelized braking through out the vehicle. Trust me i no I have a 91 Tercel rear drums brakes, were i did an axe swap 2 rear disc an now it has a more even stop, plus shorter stopping distance and better control when stopping, rear drums are a pain in the ass to change, Cheap Ass move from a classickal car company, my car is 19 years old even I did an upgrade
