Just wanted to see what you guys thought...read a few articles that said lifting a truck compromises drive line components and adversely affects resale value.

Does a modest lift done via springs and shocks hurt/help/have no effect on a Tacoma's resale value?

Asking bc I'd like to do a 2" lift/level but I don't want to hurt my trucks resale.

    Thanks and Merry Christmas!

I believe most modifications will have an impact on resale value. Some buyers might appreciate the work done if that is their intended direction, but for the most part the general population might perceive that the vehicle could be less reliable or was possibly abused. Having said that, one needs to balance what they want out of the vehicle vs what they might sell it for some day. So, make it yours and worry about resale later. Merry Christmas!

Usually modifications hurt resale value, but it seems like with trucks its negligible or even beneficial.

A lot of it depends on the buyer as well. If you find the right buyer who knows and understands what you've done, then it will be worth more to that buyer than someone who doesn't understand the mods you've made. You can also take the truck back to stock form and sell the aftermarket stuff separately when it's time to sell the truck as well if you want.

Listen to @Markc1024 though, unless you're gonna sell the truck right away, do what makes you happy and enjoy the truck now, and worry about resale value later.

This is a good point, but it’s safe to say one would never get the full value of the installed components back. Parting out is usually the best bet unless the build is super well done/documented and you’ve catered to the expo crowd (more money than sense at times).

No matter how you cut it you’re going to lose money...BUT if you do it right and are willing to wait for the right private sale, you could recover some of it. Any other option and the lift will negatively affect value.

Agreed, you will never get your money's worth back out of it - but then again, if you buy it, use it, and then sell it off of the truck, the same is true - you can't expect to sell the used parts for what you paid for them.

Its your truck, do what you want to it. You shouldnt worry about what the next owner would or would not want. Did you buy it for yourself or for someone else?
Put the lift you want, and when you think you are ready to sell it, deal with that at that time.

Several people go through this every time they try to sell a modified vehicle and learn things the hard way.
*Most* people don't give a crap what aftermarket things you have on your truck and they don't add value to the truck, unless you can find someone who wants exactly what you put on the vehicle. Even then the parts on the vehicle are now used and not worth what they cost brand new, so your $2500-retail suspension isn't worth what it cost new, so don't try adding the new price to your used car value. Regardless of whether you truck is stock or modified if it looks abused it's worth less than the average.

Well said. You might get 50% of the new price for your mods, but most likely you'll get nothing incremental.

Lift, keep OEM parts, enjoy truck, part out and sell lift, put OEM parts back on, sell.

Every new modder thinks his "vision" of what looks good is what everyone else thinks too. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Here's the rule: Any non factory mod (lift, wheels, sliders, lights, etc) will not add any value. In some cases it will actually hurt the value. Any OEM mod ( mud flaps, roof rack, etc) will maybe add a bit of value and will never hurt. New AT or all season tires will add value. MT tires, even new, will not.

Sure, there is that "one guy," that one in a thousand guy who shares your vision of what looks good and will pay for your mods. That is very rare though.

I have to disagree. Take a look at the 3rd gen or 2nd gen classifieds section - a truck with nice wheels/tires, coilovers, remote resis, aftermarket bumpers, winch, sliders, lights, skids, etc. will sell for a lot more than the same truck in stock form.

I’m not saying that you’ll get your money’s worth for these things - far from that - but I don’t think it hurts the resale value if selling private party. You can’t say that a truck with $5k in suspension stuff will sell for the exact same price as the same truck in stock form.

First, this is an enthusiast's site. This is where your "one in a thousand" customer hangs out. Second, you are seeing what people are ASKING, not what they are GETTING. Big difference.

My post was more for the real world, like marketing to the general public or trading it. Unicorns do exist though and most of them live here.

I see your point, and it’s true that it may be a rare circumstance to get what you want for your aftermarket stuff. But at least on here, I have seen plenty of people SELL their trucks with tons of add-ons for far more than stock trucks. You do have to patient though. And if you’re not selling through private party, forget it.

If you’re looking to keep the truck for a long time, do whatever you like. I’d be very careful doing mods like that on something that you’re gonna dump in just a couple years.
I won’t buy a lifted or heavily modded truck, it makes me think someone abused it and it’s gonna have lots of issues sooner rather than later. Also, unless proof of a reputable shop installed and warranties their work, why wouldn’t I think it’s Johnny’s hack job gone wrong and now it’s getting dumped?
Sure, people buy modded trucks from a dealer, because they feel ‘safe’ with a dealer lift, that their warranty will be honored and that the work was done ‘right’.
